Is it me or does the new 7900 shift levers suck compared to the old 7800? All for wankers who wanted internal cables. The shifting is not as crisp/positive/fast and the ergonomics leave a little to be desired (the new electronic levers combine the best of both…they rock). The carbon 7900 rear derailleur cage seems flimsy to me as well. I kind of regret getting rid of my 7800. Ya, the front derailleur had trim issues, but once it was set up in the sweet spot…I guess Shimano wants us all to buy the electronic. This is the first group from Shimano that was flawed since 8 speed. This is what happens when companies do not stick to what they do best (metal forging) and start following market trends (internal cables and carbon fiber dog bowls). I heard from Team Type 1 that Shimano may revise the mechanical shifters next year? Maybe to good to be true. The crank, brakes and front derailleur are great because they are based on 7800. I wonder why Saxo dropped Shimano?
I’ve got about 5,000 miles on mine and I think it’s great. I really like that I can adjust the reach on the brake levers. It’s all been working fine for me.
Seems flimsy…or IS flimsy?
You shoulda just got the best and ran with Super Record.
Just switch it to friction shifting… Index is overrated anyway and no longer needed with bar end shifters not like you got to reach down to the downtube and try to shift.
Sometimes high tech isn’t the best way to go.
I really sorry to hear you’re not enjoying - I’ve got 'em on two different bikes and both are really good.

I love Campy. I really wish I could ride it, but my damn thumbs are too stubby and I cannot reach the shifters while sprinting in the drops.
Iv got ultegra on my bike at the moment, and it it sucks, it just doesnt stay in tune. My previous groupset was campy chorus and think over 3 years of use I tuned it twice.
Will be going back to campag for the road bike -
Thats interesting. Just last night I was working on a friend’s 7900 equipped bike, adjusting the indexing for her race wheels. Once I had it dialed in, it shifted rock solid, and fast, enough for me to make a mental note of how impressed I was. It was like BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, rock solid, quick as crap shifting. Definitely better than my 7800.
I’ve been running it all season and I think it’s great. Haven’t had a single issue to speak of.
Do you want crisp feeling shifts to satisfy your tactile aesthetics? or you do you want those LAST TWO GRAMS OF AERO WEENIENESS?!?!
only you can decide!

I’ve never heard a complaint like this about Ultegra … ever. It’s either user error or a gunked up cable housing or a filthy bike or something along those lines. I’d almost guarantee it’s not the Ultegra components.
or, going from external to internal cables
.
or, going from external to internal cables
the trick is to never use a bike with external cables
so you don’t KNOW that theres a better feeling option.
same thing with carbon. just stay off it or you might suddenly realize it feels better, then you gotta spend more
=)
When it comes to shifting, internal cables is sorta like sex…with five condoms on. Sure, you may be shifting - but you can feel a damn thing and it all happens slower.
There is something wrong with your cables i bet. I noticed that my rear shifter kept going out of tune, which was unusual for it- and then 2 weeks later, cable broke at the brake handle entrance- it was going out of tune bc it only had 1-2 strands of shift cable unbroken.
If it was me id replace your cables- i bet that fixes your tune issue.
You’ve had sex with 5 condoms on? Kinda paranoid?
And some “Plasti-Kote” - can never be too careful.
Did you buy and install this as a group? Did the bikeshop install it or was it on stock equipment.
In the two latter cases, you need to check and make sure you got the real Shimano cables. They are supposed to be Teflon and the mfgs are specing crappy cheap cables so they don’t shift as well. Sometimes the bikes shop will “accidently” put on the stock shop cables and keep the nice DA cables for their own bikes.
Yokozuna Jet Lubed cables and housing will greatly improve shifting performance with 7900.
I have a bike with the 7800 and another with the 7900. The 7800 action is way better when compared side by side. Both have external frame cabling and I tried to make the 7900 cable bends around the handlebars as smooth as possible. For a system that costs that much money, I don’t think it’s worth it especially considering that the 7800 is at close-out everywhere.
If I were to do it again, I’d stick with the 7800 and would be willing to give SRAM a shot.
