Shimano Di2 Ultegra 6870 vs Dura Ace 9070 - Which to buy?

Got a new used bike and looking to switch to 11 speed from 10 speed mechanical.
I’m staying away from ultegra 6770 since it’s 10 speed. Is there any benefit from having one or the other? Going to be looking for a long cage which I won’t use to full capacity, unless really needed, but would like to have the option.

Just not sure if there’s anything regarding performance, longevity or support that I should be aware of or concerned with . Also would like to try synchro shifting.

If another newer group, which? Will likely be buying used.

You wont get syncho shifting with 9070 you will need to go to 9150.

I have Da 9070 Di2 on 2 bikes for and have beat the hell out of them they have held up flawlessly.

I am doing a new build with 9150. Had the debate btw Ulterga 8050 and Da 9150. If you search around enough you can find some good deals on 9150.

Snap I must have read that wrong. Thanks for the clarification. Looks loke 6870 unless i find a great deal on 8050/9150

Are you sure? I thought that with the current battery and firmware update, 9070 does Synchro.

Oh yea! Your right my bad… New firmware update is supposed to do it!

I’ve got 6870 on my TT bike, but went with 9070 on my road bike when they were clearing out stuff for the new 9150 series.

I reaserched all these a lot before I began parting together my bike. The 8050 Ultegra is the closest ultregra has been to Da in a long time maybe forever, the biggest difference is the materials that are being used btw the 2 which is what makes Da 9150 a tab lighter then 8050. 9070 is a work horse and is hard to beat and possible you might be able to find great deal on it since it is now “old.” I would look for deals on any of these 3 or mix and match these over 6870. Before I found a great deal on a used 9150 FD and RD I was going to mix and match some new parts from probikekit they had the best new prices. You can read through exxxviii post on parts you need depending on your build. I just finished putting all my parts together through mix of eBay, probikefit, FB Groups, and some shops offering 20% off online orders on 1 iteam.

Awesome info!

I was looking at one of the charts on etube project and didn’t see anything about the newer groups. I Wasn’t sure I could mix and match the newer with 6870 and 9070.

Haven’t been to probikekit in a while, time to pay them a visit.

Can he mix and match with the Shimano 6k series?

Can he mix and match with the Shimano 6k series?

mix and match all day long.

my new bike came with 6870 parts, and I wanted to swap them all to 8050. Got the necessary parts but also got lazy, and the FD is still 6870. Works fine

compatibility chart here

eta: mix and match the 11-speed all day long. 10-speed derailleurs (6770) cannot be mixed and matched with any 11-speed derailleurs

Also in order to run Syncro shift on 6870/9070 besides updating the firmware you’ll also need to swap out to the newer gen battery stuff. Internal would be the DN110 to replace the BTR2. External battery is the same but the holder would need to swap to the DN100 from a BMR1/BMR2.

Also imo functionally 9070 and 6870 work the same. 9070 is lighter but also more expensive. Also you are stuck with a short cage rear derailleur for 9070 but 6870 has borth a short and medium cage variants.

I’ve upgraded my road bike to Di2 and about to upgrade my Tri bike soon. 6870/9070 derailluers I’ve found deals for used stuff for nearly 1/2 the price of the best deals for brand new 8050 stuff. But it took me quite some time and patience though. Made it easier to upgrade both my bikes instead of just one honestly. Same with the TT shifters for 2 button stuff.

Now the next question is… do you like synchro shift? I have never tired it but will have it whenever I can find break the last few parts of my build. Can’t decided if I want to use it or not.

Honestly haven’t used it yet. Even though my setup on my road bike could run it I never bothered since I prefer controlling all the shifts myself. Once I finally get my Tri bike build completed I’ll definitely try it out. Probably end of this month or early November I’ll get around to getting the last couple of wires so I can install it.

I use synchro shift on my TT bike and absolutely love it. I have eTap on my road bike and absolutely love it there. I have never wished for synchro on my road bike, because I like more control over those shifts. Though, I do wish my road bike could have semi-synchro. However, I would never trade eTap’s road bike shift design for Di2 on a road bike.

Anyone know part number for a 2 button TT extension shifter? Is it the 671 shifters? I was trying to find the 9070 2 button extensions shifters but they dont pull up in any searches

The 9070 brifters have little buttons hidden in the hoods that can be programmed to switch pages on your Garmin, tag laps, etc. The 6870 lacks these.
This only matters if it is a road bike, since the TT set does not have that in either.

Otherwise, DA for the bling and a little less weight. Ultegra for the same function at a lower cost.

Yes 671

You just ruined this for me! (/s) I was set to get 6870. I never even knew those functions existed. Back to making a pros and cons list …

If you wanted to have Garmin controls with a di2 button could you just mount a extra button / remote button somewhere on else on bars/extensions and plug into last port in your 5 port junction box?

Yes. You can individually configure any button to do any thing.
