It may just be me, but whilst the rear mech on the MTB may come off occasionally for a real good clean then I can’t ever remember removing the front mech for fettling purposes. And the one time I needed to swap a front mech was after a crash where it was bent and I was swapping the chain anyway as it was new rear mech / front meck / mech hanger so it was a good time to swap a worn chain. I can’t see how it’s less effort to go back to the LBS to order a now obsolete part that they may not have rather than break and rejoin a chain.
I’m intrigued to understand what I’m missing in why you need to remove the front mech so often? And I ask as someone that moves the one chainset between TT and Road bike 3-4 times a week.
Re 8 speed - that may be my problem. It was back in the days of 8 speed (may even have been 7). You may have found the answer to something that’s been puzzling me for over a decade! Thanks

I don’t move them often at all. But now my wife and I we have a P3 and and Soloist each so that’s a lot of regular maintenance that I will have to keep up with. It just seems like a really dumb idea to replace the screw with the rivet. I don’t know what benefits there are with 5700 over 5600 but I’d rather have the screw there for ease of access. No extra hassle for me to exchange it, I go past the LBS regularly.
I use KMC chains and the quick link is very easy to use. If you can’t figure out how to do it with your fingers you can even buy a special pair of pliers to assist.
