Today I was out for a ride on my road bike and the chain sucked the rear derailleur backwards, bending the derailleur. I can take my dura ace derailleur off my tri bike (dura ace) and use it to replace the damaged one (dura ace also).
My question is what is the most affordable rear derailleur that will work with 9 speed bar end shifters? I can switch them to friction if need be but I like the index feature. I’m having trouble even finding a 9 speed 105. So, I’d go SRAM if it will work, I’d even use an LX if will do the job. I just don’t feel I need dura ace for tri shifting. I just need to be able to ride and price at this time is an issue.
First, make sure your derailleur hanger wasn’t bent.
Then find a 105 rear der. Even a 10-speed rear derailleur will work. It’s the shift lever that determines the movement of the derailleur so you can mix them. (or borrow the DA from your other bike).
So what actually happened? Your der. was bent backwards? Did it get caught in the cogs?
My chain dropped of the front chainrings, and I guess the chain got caught in the cogs and pulled the rear derailleur, causing it to get pulled upwards towards the cogs. It just barely hit the spokes but didn’t damage them.
i don’t know if the hanger has been bent. I thought I’d put the bike back together and see how the chain line is. I’d like to find another affordable rear derailleur first. i don’t want my tri bike missing it’s deraileur and then find out my hanger is bent on the road bike. I’d have two bikes not working.
Any current Shimano RD will work, including mtn. get a mtn RD if you think you might ever put on a wide range cassette (cogs bigger than 27).
the cheapest is probably the deore for $22 at www.cambriabike.com oops - looks like they are out of the MD510 and the MD511 is $45. i bought the md510 three months ago for my commuter/tourer and it’s been working great.
cambria also has the ultegra rd-6500 for $40 - looks like a long cage for double or triple.
SRAM will work as long as it’s not the 1:1 actuation ratio (aka EXA or EXact Actuation)
Thanks, you gave the answer I needed.
Good karma to you!
