Shark Attack kills swimmer in San Diego

Still breaking news from this morning…No details yet, but pay attention to the local news site…Happened at Solana Beach’s Fletcher Cove.

I saw that. I know the Tri Club swims there sometimes on Friday morning. I went there to swim a couple of weeks ago but nobody showed so I stayed on shore. Not sure if it is a swimmer or surfer…

Eek!

TCSD was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the union tribune newsflash…

Just saw the news, it was a group of nine swimmers and apparently the shark attacked one of the slower swimmers (late 60’s male).

This is so terrible.

One of my biggest nightmares. This is horrible news.

I know the Tri Club swims there sometimes on Friday morning.

The TCSD website shows a swim scheduled this morning at 6:30.

From the little information that seems to be in the wild, I infer that it’s very likely that the deceased was a member of the tri club on the group swim.

Wow.

My friend just sent me a note, it was one of the members. Think a kind thought for him and his family and friends.

So sad to hear. I know quite a few that swim there regularly. The news just said that there are kelp beds that the swimmers swim right by and that the sharks feed in the kelp beds. Don’t know if I’ll swim there again.

This is a sad a tragic news. My condolences to his family.

To put things into perspective, on average, 5 people die worldwide from a shark attack per year. I’ll keep swimming in the ocean.

The U-T confirms your friends note.

Yes, absolutely. Good mojo to all of the family and friends, and also to the others who were swimming in the group. I’m sure that they are rather traumatized as well.

I can’t imagine how those people are feeling right now.

“This is a sad a tragic news. My condolences to his family.”
Same here…terrible news.

I would as well…unfortunately it’s a long drive from Chicago to any ocean :-/

5 people die worldwide from a shark attack.
in a year?

This is so sad. I generally tell myself when out in the ocean that sharks only eat people by accident. And that I’m safer with a group.

The friends and family are in my thoughts, how sad for the SD area tri community.

RR

A dark day indeed for the family and friends of the gentleman - along with the members of the SDTC.
Deepest Condolensces to all

We are playing in their playground when we choose to swim in the ocean - what makes this such a tragedy is that so few people actually die from shark attacks worldwide, this shark was either sick or mistook the swimmer for a seal perhaps.

It seems they managed to get the victim to the beach which would possibly indicate that the shark bit and released - however the ferocity of a shark bite means if a critical artery is struck - the victim will bleed out or suffer from a heart attack.
I have grown up in and around the ocean and although have encountered sharks on many ocassions, never once did they bother us surfing

A loss of life is tragic under any circumstances - this is such an unlikely encounter - think about how many of our colleagues we lose yearly to auto accidents by comparison

Please don’t allow this incident to prevent you from swimming in the ocean

Well said.

yes, and last year i think it was more like 3
.

Yes, per year. I’ll edit my post for clarification.

KNBC in LA says it was a triathlete. Solano Beach is where I did my first triathlon. So sad.

Wikipedia gets an “A” for fast coverage and “F” for blaming it “probably a great white”.
