Sesamoiditis

Has anyone here ever had Sesamoiditis? If so; How long was your recovery? What did you do for recovery? Did you have any recurring pain? Did you use an orthodic now or when it occurred?

Thanks!

Yes! I have…and it can be fixed/managed. I went to a Podiatrist (sounds like you may have too or you wouldn’t know the clinical term) and he took out the regular liner in my shoe (I already have orthotics that cover the back half of my foot) and glued a section of cork pad to the bottom and cut out a little notch where the sesamoid can rest. It was like being cured instantly. 2 1/2 years later I still have the Poditrist modify my liner with this cork stuff so I can run without worrying about it hurting me again (more of a precautionary thing.

So, is it safe to assume you did not decrease your training at all once you modified your insole?

Ditto here. The key is getting a pad that takes pressure off the sesamoids and distributes it to the surrounding area. I do it with a Spenco insole with a hole cut in it under the big toe joint.

Yup most cases are treated by simply offloading the affected sesamoid as per the blokes above (usually the tibial sesamoid and rarely the fibular one or both). Occasionally, this is not helpful and a stress fx or occult fx of the sesamoid needs to be ruled out.

I was in full-on marathon training mode and didn’t miss a workout.

I had it after IMMoo last year. Got thicker training shoes and it fixed itself. I was running in Mizuno Wave Precisions for training and racing. Now I train in Mizuno Wave Riders and race in Precisions.
