Seriously?! Mechanical doping is really a thing

I really thought mechanical doping would instantly go away as soon as officials started looking for it. But nooooo…

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/three-riders-disqualified-under-mechanical-doping-rule/

I’m confused. It looks like the bikes were simply under the UCI weight limit? Or is that just the excuse given by the rider?

That was the smokescreen that Pouly was shooting for, from what I can tell.

Had to look it up. The specified rule, 12.1.13bis is this one:

Technological fraud is an infringement to article 1.3.010. Technological fraud is materialised by: ï‚· The presence, within or on the margins of a cycling competition, of a bicycle that does not comply with the provisions of article 1.3.010. ï‚· The use by a rider, within or on the margins of a cycling competition, of a bicycle that does not comply with the provisions of article 1.3.010.

Which lamely just refers to another rule.

Rule 1.3.010 is:

The bicycle shall be propelled solely, through a chainset, by the legs (inferior muscular chain) moving in a circular movement, without electric or other assistance. In para-cycling, mechanical prostheses/orthopaedic braces for upper or lower limbs can only be used by athletes who have been evaluated in accordance with the UCI classification procedure and who have Review (R) or Confirmed (C) status. In no case may a mechanical prosthesis/orthopaedic brace for the lower limbs be used outside paracycling events.

So it appears it is technological fraud, unless there was an error in reporting the number, etc.

I wonder if he only used the bike with the motor on the last day, or if they did not test his bike until the last day.

not entirely directed at the OP, but the entire world…

What The F#ck is mechanical doping??? that is the most BS term ever invented. (okay maybe not, but dont ruin my rant). “mechanical doping” is just freaking cheating. don’t try to gloss this to sound less offensive than it is. put a motor on your bike, is cheating, you are a cheater. bike is too light, you are cheating. navigational doping… nope, you just cut the course… cheating.

call cheating cheating and cheaters cheaters.

Wow

Doping is cheating. Are you trying to imply that drug doping is less offensive than cutting a course of using a moped in a bike race?

I’m not a huge fan of the term, but just because it’s nonsensical, not because it’s an apologist euphemism for a form of cheating, which I don’t think that it is.

Pouly had a tough call to make. Install the motor and ride a heavier bike, or cheat light. Give the guy a break. Cheaters struggle too.

Chemical doping is cheating, too. Cheating is cheating. And it’s impossible to tell if the 30W of mechanical doping will do more to make someone win than the 30W of chemical doping.

But I understand what you’re saying. Riding a bike with a motor in it isn’t even the same sport. It’s motorcycle racing.

OR get some brains and install a “blank” in place of the motor to achieve the minimum weight. Amateures. Geez.

Whats i don’t understand why ANY of the bikes that are prepped and ready to ride would be under weight or non-compliant at any event. That’s just stupid and clearly, there’s another explanation. Maybe those light frames were supposed to only be used with 2x drivetrains or with heavier more aero wheels. But they mistakenly put climbing wheels and 1x drivetrain on them.

yes, all doping is cheating (guess that didnt come across too well), but not all cheating is a form of doping (more of the point i was trying to make).

it’s becoming similar to the use of “gate” which when added to the end of any word in the English language implies some sort of conspiracy. stupid.

just a pet peeve that when combined with a glass of wine or two = rant post.

I hear you. My cycling terminology pet peeve is “brifter.” Makes my skin crawl. Don’t know why.

But it is more than that…using a motor is not “doping”, mechanical or otherwise.

I loathe the term “mechanical doping” because it is simlly wrong…it is mechanical fraud or mechanical cheating.

I get it that motorized enhancement is not doping. It’s just a term that caught on. For now, that’s the term that the rulebook uses. Let’s not let those words dilute this discussion, though.

Perhaps calling it “doping” allows a whole already-existing section of the rulebook to easily apply.

For those who want to know the full story: it’s here

There certainly is some intent to ‘bend the rules’ here, but perhaps not in an intent to dope, per se. I personally know members of the team and the general sentiment is that they are pissed at crawford.

that being siad, wtf is going on when you don’t have a UCI legal spare bike for your TEAM LEADER, on the most critical day of the race? highly unprofessional.

Totally with you on this. I am shocked really by this. How far will one go? Needs to be called what it really is. It is not doping of any kind, I can tell that.

It is not doping of any kind, I can tell that.

It’s metaphorical use of the word.

Doping is using drugs to cheat.

Mechanical doping is using motors to cheat!
