I know about the full-disc aero covers, such as those sold by WheelBuilder … Are there semi-aero covers to give a standard rim an extra 50-80mm of rim depth? If so, where can I find them?
Thanks

No. Due to the complexity added by the spokes, it’s essentially impossible.
Chris
not that I have seen. not an easy way to secure such a device, or make the inner edge well shaped, which would be very important.

At one time back in the 90s, a company called “J-disc” did just that. Apparently, you’d send them wheels and they’d ship back to you the wheel with a “clamshell” type cap installed. They also covered spoked wheels with mylar to create “discs”.
They went out of business a long time ago, though…
I don’t remember them offering that service, but they did sponsor the Coors LIght team and they showed up at the 92 Tour DuPont with “Deep rim” wheels fro J-Disc.
Their wheels were fairly popular for awhile back in the early 90’s.
OIC … I’m considering a doing the ITT series at Fiesta Island, CA with my PowerTap wheel. But it’s so windy out there and I don’t think my 140 lbs can hold the bike down and steady … hence, my question. So thanks for the info!
I meant doing the TT with my powertap, but with more aero features then just my 27mm dish alone … a full disc and the windy venue will probably be too much for me body type
oh well. I might have to just tuck lower
I have one of the J-Disk front wheels sitting in my basement. I have had some fast rides on it. It looks to have been factory built and I would think that the process would be way too complex for a “bolt-on” after market cover. They show up on ebay every now and then, usually cheap.

It’s really not typically that windy that early in the morning at Fiesta…and a full disc will actually make the bike MORE stable than a shallower depth wheel in the back for a given depth of front wheel. I’ll reduce the depth of my front wheel down to a low profile rim before I’ll take the covers off of my rear wheel.
140lbs is that light either…I know of ~100 lb. women who don’t have any problem handling disc rear wheels and relatively deep front wheels in what most would consider windy conditions…
Also, I find that with a good setup, my bike is actually MORE stable when I’m in the aerobars than when I’m in the “pursuit” position…so, don’t try to judge the stability of a setup without actually getting into the aero position…and relaxing
Tom A - that makes great sense ! I will need a set of those covers in the future anyway, so guess I’ll go ahead and order a pair from WhlBldr
The only reason I want my standard wheel in the back is b/c i gotta have the PT. My HEDs don’t mean anything to me without power. I seriously think i’m mentally ill for this reliance on power feedback
