Sell me a phone

Okay … I am finally at the point that I need a new phone. My iPhone 3 battery is at the point where I have to keep it plugged in if I want more than a couple hours of life.

I am not wedded to apple products (even though I am typing this on an iPad), and am “frugal,” so the thought of spending $400+ on a new iPhone does not get me excited. However, if that is the best solution then I am fine with the cost. I did like the look of the htc inspire at Costco for the nice price of $50 (with a contract).

I’ve used a blackberry and my current iPhone in the past 5 years. Blackberrys were company supplied, iPhone is mine. All were used for work, as will the new one (changed divisions a few months back or I would still be a bberry guy). I was fine with my previous blackberry bold, but do like the screen on my iPhone.

I need to have a phone that will work for corporate email, text messages, and phone calls. Light web-browsing and limited apps are next on the list. FaceTime from apple looks nice, but not sure how much I would really use it (but we are getting an iPad 2 this winter, so it “may” be fun). I’ve never used an android based phone, so that would be a change. Battery life would also be important, but anything would be better than what I have now. I do plan to stay with AT&T.

So … What do you have?

Thanks, drn92

I was at the same point with my iPhone 3GS. I shelled out the $200 for the new iPhone 4S. I thought about just getting the iPhone 4 for $100, but Siri and a better processor pushed me over the edge.

You can also get a 3G with a contract for $50 or something like that. If you have ATT and look at their website it will tell you if you’re eligible for an upgrade and how much a new iPhone (different versions) will cost.

You can also probably sell the old one for $50-100 via Craigslist. I sold my old 3G with a cracked screen and busted toggle (silence) switch for $125 when I upgraded to the 3GS. I had someone offer me $75 for my 3GS with cracked corners, a missing power button (fell out the night before the 4S was delivered), and 2 hours of battery life on a fully charged battery.

Thanks. I like my current iPhone and am sure I’d like the new one, but with the nicer camera I would think I need 32gb so I am not hurting for space. By the time you add AppleCare and a case, $400+ is the cost.

Right now I have 16gb and have only used 5, so maybe I need less memory than I thought.

Thanks, drn92

PS - you are a zoomie, if I remember correctly. I spent a little time there myself.

If you can, wait a month as carriers launch a lot of new phones before black friday but if you can’t Id recommend you look at a Windows 7 Phone. Very well done UI and great for corporate email, excellent battery life and an app store that’s decent and growing by the day.

Really???
Who wants to buy a piece of crap for that much (not talking about the Iphone but se, but its condition).

Fred.

Currently, I can’t think of a single reason why someone would want a Windows 7 based phone.
Definitively top 2 are: Apple & Android and then BB (but BB is hurt pretty bad currently).

based on his prerequisites a WP7 phone is something he should look at. If you dont like it, fine, but its a very elegant and smooth UI, with several form factor options. Unless you really need that corner case app that tells you what your fart is going to smell like when you drink a Hefeweizen then you are most likely covered with Marketpplace. Plus, all previously released phones should now have the Mango update available.

if you’re handy with electronics - you can buy iphone batteries on ebay, and there are instructions on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr6HWZa0dGM&feature=pyv&ad=5605358183&kw=iPhone%203G%20battery%20replacement

if you don’t want to replace it yourself - http://www.ubreakifix.com/ (they replaced a cracked screen on my 3gS, and did great work)
.

Sounds good in theory, but no way am I going to try to replace my battery and/or be out of touch for 3+ days (unfortunately, this is my only phone, so I have to stay connected … plus I am not that handy with small electronics).

Looking at eBay you might get $100 for your old phone

You could get an iPhone 4 instead of 4s for $150-200 depending on memory, which would make it about $100 after selling the old one
.

I would think you might start with your corporate email team if that is a requirement. I know mine only currently support blackberry and only if it a company black berrry. They plan to support android soon, but not yet. so Corporations can be funny about apps. They need to make sure you are using some app that sends a copy of all your emails to some industrial spy. See what they are willing to support.

Good point on the corporate email piece. I switched divisions recently. Previously I had a couple different flavors of blackberries (and the company picked up the tab). Now I can get any device I want but I have to submit the bill each month for reimbursement. It would not surprise me to see my new division go towards blackberries in the future (assuming RIM stays viable).

Guys have every different flavor of devices. A bunch are on Android based phones on the Sprint network because we used to have a deal with Sprint. Now it is like the wild west … anything goes.

Hate to spend a bunch of cash on an iphone and then have the company decide to support blackberries …

Planning to keep the old one, discontinue the phone service, and let my kids use it as an ipod touch. I didn’t pay for my iphone (or the blackberries before … did I mention I am frugal?).

I guess there’s a big market for people to buy old iphones and fix them up and sell them. I think they sell them outside the US where they are harder to get and a lot more expensive.

+1

Have had an iPhone 3GS, and have had several Blackberries with work, and prefer my Windows Phone to any of them. It handles email and Office documents very well, which is good for me as I use it primarily for work, and does browsing the same as all the phones seem to these days. Doesn’t have a huge range of apps but has enough for me. What I really like is the interface - similar to the direction that Windows 7 has taken, it favours simplicity over trying to do too much. Have had no problems performance-wise - is certainly more stable than my iPhone (though in fairness I think my 3GS was a bit of a lemon of a phone, must have come out of the factory at 4.59pm on a Friday :)). Only just got round to upgrading to Mango yesterday, so don’t have any views on how much of an improvement that is.

As far as I can see, the reason MS don’t have a bigger market share is simply that they don’t have the existing customer base that the other 3 do, and aren’t offering any obvious innovative or market-changing functionality that is sufficient to persuade people to change. They need to find themselves a USP - Mango looks like it will only suffice to keep them up with the competition, not put them into the lead, maybe the tie-up with Nokia might lead to something they can build around.

I can’t imagine a company that needs secure email would go with anything but a BB. I am amazed at the companies that let their staff have whatever mobile device they want.

My company would be an example!
We are on Android devices!

One nice feature about the iPhone 4S is you can actually speak instead of typing which is what I’m doing now
.

Okay … how about another option …

I see that Blackberry PlayBooks are now on sale (32 GB model for $400 …). How about a blackberry phone and a playbook combo pack? Seems like I might be able to leave the laptop at home if I could pair the two together and have an app that would let me manipulate Office documents.

Anyone try this?

Thanks, drn92

PS - changed my email settings to 15 min instead of “push” and can now go most of the day without recharging (unless I am on a lot of calls).
