All my other is square taper, so I am lost with this one.
I am trying to pull a SRAM crank from a Giga X-Pipe Bottom bracket. I took out the bolt and the crank arms will not budge. Tapped it pretty hard with a mallet and still no dice. This only has about 100 miles on it since I last pulled the cranks.
Any ideas on how to get this off? I need this bike to put a whipping on Chris G this Sunday.
“Self extracting” cranks have some sort of mechanism that takes the crank off when the bolt is unscrewed, but typically the bolt is retained by the crank arm. Normal cranks the bolt is removed completely and you use a supplemental tool to force the crank arm off the spindle.
Are you sure your cranks are really self extracting?
The only self extracting cranks I have used, use the bolt to remove the crank with a screw in washer that goes into the crank threads separately, over the bolt. Did you remove the washer or lose it?
dont the self extracting cranks have a cap over th ebolt that exracts, which if removed renders them non self extracting? ie put bolt back on and cap and then leave cap on and extract? i though tI had that issue years back once. maybe it was a dream
When you say you removed the bolt,… you mean you removed both the self-extracting bolt and the retainer bolt? The self-extracting bolt is meant to stay in the non-drive crank and actually push the crankarm off as you unscrew the bolt. Or am I misunderstanding your post?

The cap must have fallen off. I did not realize when I first looked at the cranks since I have square taper on my other three bikes and am not very familiar.
Is the cap a standard small part that I should be able to get at a bikeshop?
It all depends on the shop. That isn’t a piece that is typically removed, so you may have to do some hunting. If all else fails, give SRAM a call and they might send you one if you’re nice.
The NDS crank arm should come off, then you push the spindle/DS crank arm/rings section out the other side. I’ve had to tap the spindle pretty hard, but never had any issues getting off the NDS arm.
I’d imagine a reasonably sized shop that is a SRAM dealer would have a couple of those sitting around. I’ve done the exact same thing, although I didn’t lose it after I took it out. I did go to an awful lot of trouble to take out the retainer piece tho. Took a fair amount of finagling it back in firmly enough so that it wouldn’t try to remove itself when spinning the crank bolt. Esp since the retainer is some off size to prevent all but the most determined of idiots from removing it (I used the head of some english bolt that almost fit as a socket of sorts).
Felt really silly after, esp now that I know how simple it is to pop my cranks off.
If you really need it off and are stuck you can ride it off carefully. Put the bike on a trainer and ride a bit. that should wiggle the crank are loose. You want to be careful that you ride just enogh to get it loose.
Or you can just use the force (well someone had to say it).
if you do not figure it out I can help on Thursday…I have the ultimate set of tools and do not want you to have excuses before the race…excuses are for after the race
