I’m planning a 3 day trek across Missouri on the Katy Trail. I’m looking for input on what bike to bring.
Looking to average 80-100 miles per day and trying to stay efficient and comfortable to survive the 3 day stretch.
I currently have an old road bike and a hard tail mountain bike. I’m leaning towards 27mm cruiser tires on my road bike (biggest that will fit), but seeking input from those who have been on the trail.
I live in CO so won’t have ability to “test” anything before I embark on the trip.
What would you ride?
Over the last few years 3 friends and I did Multi-day trips from Canada to Northern California, and from NY city along the Erie Canal trail to Buffalo. We all rode gravel bikes with rear panniers and were all very pleased with how nicely they worked for us
I’d ride my mtb with smooth tread tires for a more comfortable ride. A gravel bike would be perfect for limestone trails though. I’m afraid the 27mm RB may beat you up over those 3 days.

The one time I rode the trail - August 2013 - I did so on a Cannondale SuperX shod with Schwalbe Marathon 35-wide tires, which I found to be an overkill. If I would do it again, I would likely sport 30s, and only go smaller if I aimed to go after Strava KOMs. I believe 27s would be a bit narrow for the ride you plan and agree with the recommendation to gets for the mountain bike.
