Seen while driving

Saw this today on the interstate. Truck had Canadian plates.
Each container was labeled “Uranium Hexafluoride” and 11700 KG which I think is about 26,000 lbs. It had radiation stickers and some other hazmat stickers too, but no escort of any kind.

Reading the article above it says “95% of the depleted uranium produced to date is store as uranium hexafluoride”. So this is essentially nuclear waste. The article also has a picture of a cylinder identical to these two.

The radiation levels measured on the outside surface of filled depleted UF6 storage cylinders are typically about 2 to 3 millirem per hour decreasing to about 1 mrem/h at a distance of 1 ft

so if you stood with your face up against that cylinder, for an hour, thats as much radiation as eating 220 bananas
.

Those damn deadly bananas.

Jack, I love how you measure all radiation in “bananas”! Really puts it in perspective!

I’m sure the levels are safe. I was surprised to see no escort, and only 3 heavy duty tie down straps per container. With no escort they should disguise the cargo (at least have a tarp over it if there’s a reason not to have it enclosed) instead of having it exposed to people like me who take pictures while driving…

Chuck Norris was driving

=)

I imagine the stuff just can’t be used to make weapons so they don’t care.
