I’m heading up to Middletown NY for easter weekend and looking for a 50-60 mile route that is cyclist friendly. I can map things out on Mapmyride, etc. but not sure if the shoulders are there, road conditions, etc. Any locals that can help me out, would be greatly appreciated.
Wen in doubt, contact the local bike shops

I would also suggest driving to Harriman St park and do the loop a few times if the roads are open, lots of cyclists train there. I am sure it is on mapmyride.com.
Thanks. I have found some rides thru Harriman Park. Looks like some climbing in front of me.

I actually suggest you ride TO Harriman. I live south of there but my son had a lacrosse game in Middletown, so I mapped a ride from Middeltown thru Harriman. My wife drove home and I got to take a memorable point to point ride
Sorry, I didn’t save it but there are some great roads that run parallel to Route 17 (which you want to stay off of until Tuxedo/Sloatsburg). It may be a bit far to get to Harriman and back but you can do a nice out and back along 17.
If you decide to go to Harriman, you can pick up Arden Vally Road off of 17 and up into Harriman.
Enjoy!
Do you know anything about the Orange Heritage Trail? It looks like I can take that from Goshen down to Monroe to get me near Harriman. Then loop up and around the park.
I do not sorry. But, glancing at the map, 17M is the road I took parallel to 17 and it was mostlly a back country road, light on traffic except through one or two of the towns.

I live in the Middletown area and there are plenty of good roads to ride. I’ve only ridden the heritage trail a couple of times and didn’t care for it because of the slower traffic plus the speed limit. I think heading that way 17M would be better.
Closer to Middletown you could head out North St./17M through Bloomingburg into Wurtsboro with a nice climb over the Wurtsboro Mtn., then pick up 209 which is very nice heading either North or South. If you go south you can pick up 211 back to Middletown.
Not sure what you are used to, but I am used to country roads, so I personally would avoid the part of 211 right through Middletown itself, say between the city limits to the west, and the Galleria mall to the east, and also 17M as it passes through the city. I like to ride east on 211 through Montgomery to Walden. From there you can head up 208 to the Hamlet of Wallkill, or take Rte 52 to Pine Bush.
Some other good main roads are 17K from Rte 747 by Stewart airport all the way to Bloomingburg, Rte 207 from Rte 747 to Goshen, Scotchtown Ave/Goshen Tpke, from Goshen to Bloomingburg, and Mount Hope Rd. Back roads are generally in good shape, but at this time of year potholes, frost heaves, and sand might be an issue, but probably not.
One road I would absolutely avoid is Rte. 302. Bad pavement, no shoulders, and too much traffic driving way too fast. I never ride there.
I hope that’s not too much info and it makes sense. I personally think this area is great for riding, so have fun!
Thanks this is the detail I was looking for. Do you have any routes recorded on GPS that you could share? I’m used to country roads and rollers. My mother is about 3 miles off of 17k. I have run on that stretch west of Montgomery and felt pretty safe. I don’t mind getting passed by people doing 50 assuming the shoulders are super wide. Kind of used to that too. I just want a solid 70 mile endurance ride to prep for White Lake.
I sometimes use strava heatmaps and climbs to help find routes. It can at least show you which roads are well traveled by cyclists.
