SD Triathletes: "Riding on Del Dios Hwy...holys@#t"

This is a question for all the San Diego Triathletes out there. I was visiting SD this past weekend and saw hundreds of riders on Del Dios Hwy.

“How dangerous is it, riding on that road?” The speed limit was 55mph in certain areas. “Are there any better roads to ride on with less traffic.”

Just curious, b/c it scared the crap out of me seeing the cars just fly by the cyclist like it was perfectly normal.

Be careful out there folks!!!

Yeah, Del Dios can be a bit scary but it is a fun road, especially going down. In the 11 years I have been riding it I have never seen a bike/car accident there.

It is probably one of the safer roads to ride on, at least in comparison to Hwy 67 and San Pasqual Rd. where there are sections with no shoulder.

Yes. Palomar Mtn.

There are a handful of real highways that allow cyclists as well. Pretty mych every time I do a ride from my house I ride up and over the 52 where cars and Semis regularly ride in the 80s. Thankfully there’s a nice wide shoulder. Whenever a semi blows by in the right lane I get a real nice push from all the wind it generates.

I guess you get used to it.
