Looking at both of these bikes and curious to hear of anyones experience with either. The CR1 Premium has Ultegra Di2 and the Foil has Ultegra 6700. I have read the info from Scott and know that the Foil frame is more aero but a bit heavier and the CR1 is a little more comfort oriented. Will primarily ride over the Winter to give my tri bike a break. Some group rides and trainer/rollers. Thoughts on these models or experience with Scott bikes? Will purchase through the LBS and CR1 would be $700-800 more.
Thanks
I have the Foil 15 (Ultegra Di2) and the move to electronic has been fantastic. Shifting onto the big ring with cold numb hands is suddenly no longer an issue in winter
If you were focusing on out and out racing the Foil may have a few advantages but from what you are looking for I’d be all over the CR1 with Di2…
IMHO, if it is not a bike you’ll be racing, there’s no reason to buy an aero road frame. There’s also no reason to care about weight and as you know the difference in weight between a CR1 frame and Foil frame is all but negligible from a performance standpoint. I have a Foil I built to be under 15 pounds pretty easily, so there isn’t a huge compromise on weight there.
I race the Foil and ride it a lot in season. It is definitely not what you would call “comfortable” or “comfort oriented”. But if you want to race, it can’t be beat. The difference between it and a “comfort oriented” CF bike will likely be less than the difference between riding on 23 vs 25 tires though. Over the winter or to give myself a break, I ride a lugged steel frame. bought a mid-90’s Bianchi frame and built with modern parts. That is the most ideal off season/have fun riding/comfortable (a comfort difference you can really feel) bike money can buy - and it’s significantly cheaper too.
ETA: I’ve ridden the steel bike in very fast group rides and raced a couple times when the FOIL was out for a warranty exchange. I felt slightly disadvantaged while sprinting at the end of a crit, but that’s it. It also weighs over 23 pounds and I couldn’t use my Zipps on it. My point is, you’re not gonna get dropped from a group ride or miss out because you’re not on a CF “race” bike.
I have a CR1 Elite, Sram Rival great bike. The foil is more suited for the guys racing crits. doing a lot of roadie miles etc. stiffer aero frame. The CR1 is very comfortable bike and would very likely be the right bike for you by the description you gave. Now not sure if you need the di2 but what the heck.
Which one do you feel the best on and is the color what your looking for?
Just went through a similar dilema. Ended up buying the Foil 20. Absolutely terrific bike. The CR1 pro does come with better wheels though
