Recently upgraded an iPhone in our family. Went to the store, looked over all. Got a series of emails over next few days. One was for the $17 a month protection plan I didn’t agree to. Just slipped in.
Spent 30 minutes on phone this am getting it canceled/taken off.
Have to look over everything every month. And with the dissolution of the CFPB, I see this being a wild west again.
The same way if you use Uber Eats, they’ll try to make you sign up for their monthly fee by having a button to sign up for it that looks exactly like when you finalize and submit your order. And trying to call them is a PITA. I ended up removing the app and using another service.
I saw that on one of my CC bills and tried taking it off… only to see it reappear the next month.
Can’t call them to cancel etc., so I always think I did, and make a note to check next month.
I get that places will make it a hassle to try to cancel a recurring CC charge, but I’m open to suggestions on effective ways to do so especially when it’s difficult to actually get in touch w/the merchant behind it.
Yes it is. Fucking scam. Guessing you probably did what I did. Thought you were just ordering but ended up signing up. You need to cancel on the app directly and then since it’s designed to mislead, just use something else
So I must be an easy mark, as this just happened. And I will say, impressive.
I missed a call from local number, and message identified themself a Lieutenant in a local county sheriff department. Needed to speak with me about an “urgent legal matter”.
I was suspicious. But because I work in that county, I thought it might be related to a patient who was in trouble and it was an investigation.
I called back. Reported officer identified himself. It sounded like a station, with dispatch sounds in background. And he told me I was about to be placed on a recorded line. I immediately paused, and said “Let me repeat, you are Lieutenant so and so from such and such county, and you want me on a recorded line?” The call immediately dropped. When I tried back, the number would not answer.
I then called that actual Country Sheriff office, and they were great. Confirmed the name used was an actual officer, but this did not come from them and was indeed a scam.
It seems like this is a known scam, a first for me.
Recent scam in academia is an email claiming to be “insert some institutional leader” with cell number then saying please call me back asap. Don’t know what happens next but it happened to me a couple of years ago except the scammer didn’t know my dept chair had just stepped down and wasn’t chair anymore
