…and the forecast called for a low of 43 and a high of 52, and RAIN! What would you wear? I’ve been training in either sub-freezing weather and a few times 55+ in sunny / dry conditions, I’m not exactly sure what I need for this temp range considering I’ll be getting wet.
FWIW, I did IMOO in 2006 with temps in the mid-50 with it raining all day and was actually fine, but I wasn’t working as hard during the marathon as I will be Sunday, AND, it’s goinig to be about 10 degrees colder. Not sure how these will offset. Thanks!
The rule of thumb is to dress as you would if it was about 20 degrees more than the expected temp. Mid 50’s is almost the ideal race temp for a marathon (without the rain).
At Boston last year where it was in the 40’s and raining (and windy as hell) I wore shorts, tech tee, a light weight jacket and the cheap mesh gloves. Worked well for me.
I would wear lightweight tights, a long sleeved tech jersey and a wind vest. I’d also wear a hat with a lid to keep the rain out of my face as much as possible. As long as the rain isn’t a downpour, it actually sounds like great weather to run in.
There’s no way I’d be wearing shorts, though! It’s got to be much, much warmer for me to run in shorts.
Tights and a form fitting short sleeve (lycra base layer) top. Add a really light beanie or I wear one of those head band thingys that covers the ears. As long as it’s something light and small enough that you can put it in your waistband once you warm up, I think you’d appreciate having it. Tight fitting clothes that don’t absorb water would be key. Feet would be a personal decision. Personally I wear the same thin socks down to freezing temps. Seems like it’ll be warm enough though that you don’t have to worry about the sock decision.
Sounds like ING Atlanta? I’ll be there for the half, and am planning on shorts and SS Tech-T. If I was doing the full I might be tempted to go with longsleeves(but lightweight) top and a headband or light beanie.
yes, it’s Atlanta. A few days ago Sunday looked clear, but it changed when I checked last night. I’m coming from Chicago, so I’m packing everything I would remotely consider wearing and I can figure it out once I get there.
Are you fast or slow. If your fast and its 45 -50ish shorts and ss shirt, maybe armwarmer just in case. If you’re slower (not meant to be an insult) you wont be generating as much heat and should wear a bit more. Keep in mind in cool cold weather if you are cimfortable at the start you will sweat buckets when running and in cold weather you wont feel the need to drink as muck, so be careful.
I would not worry about the rain as of 3p.m. friday they say it would be LIGHT and spotty.A little rain sat. will be a good thing we have had some warm days and the pollen is building up.There is a light coat of yellow pollen on the cars now.Low 50 will be just right. Temp now Fri 3p.m 69.

I’m doing the National Marathon here in DC tomorrow and the temps sound the same. I plan on wearing shorts, tri top (for the pockets to carry a couple of gels) and a dri-fit short sleeve. Perhaps light weight gloves for the first half.
Quite ideal conditions. Definitely shorts and technical T - the only question is whether to take a light jacket or not. I’d make that a game time decision.
Last year’s Boston was similar. I went with the jacket and regretted it as it was too warm. Felt like pitching it, but it was new and I’m too cheap, so I wrapped it around my waist like a total rookie!
Absolutely no tights unless you are freakishly susceptible to the cold. Wear shorts. Trust me, you do NOT want to get to mile 3 of a marathon and realize you are too warm.
In the shirt department I would wear either a singlet or a singlet over a short sleeve shirt. If I were particularly concerned about cold I might even wear arm-warmers since you can take them off without messing around with a shirt.
You can always start off with a cheap long-sleeve on top of your singlet/shirt (one you don’t care about) and discard it during the race
Consider wearing a baseball cap or visor (technical fabrics are best) to keep the rain out of your eyes.
