Sastre's Carbon Cervelo

Did anyone see Sastre was riding a carbon fiber Cervelo on his way to the stage win this weekend?

I did not know Cervelo was making carbon fiber? Any one else know anything about this?

would love to know about that bike too.

And why wasn’t there a big cervelo lable on it, the Tour is also about marketing isn’t it?

I wondered the same thing about the lack of labeling. In fact it had me wondering whether or not Sastre was riding a Cervelo at all… An opportunity was missed there for sure.

Sastre’s bike is the same R2.5 frame as Tyler is on. Cervelo officially launched these bikes sometime before the tour. They rode them at the Dauphine, and none of them had the new labeling that Tyler’s bike has on it. They all looked like Sastre’s at that time. They also didn’t have Wolf forks on them. It is a new bike, and new design for Cervelo, and one which is a work in progress. Likely Sastre’s mountains bike didn’t have time to get the paint job for some reason. I’ll say this, it speaks well of Cervelo and the confidence Bjarne and co. have in them to hop on these relatively “unproven” bikes for a race like the TDF, although they certainly had them for training for some time. Bjarne is a huge stickler for solid equipment. Cervelo also hints at an R2.5 “light” version, which its unclear if these are the bikes CSC is on at this time, but says that model will not be available until next year. At any rate, the R2.5 is a reality and should be hitting the streets any time now. Of course, whether you’ll be able to get one soon depends on Cervelo’s ability to ramp up production to meet the demand. At any rate, read all about the bike at Cervelo’s site.

next thing you know there will be titanium P3’s.

Missed opportunity? There was no thread on Piil’s R2.5 with the Cervelo decals, yet there is one on Sastre’s R2.5, so it can’t be that bad. And we’re getting quite a few orders for them too.

Just some more info, Tyler and Carlos got some early prototypes and since they were protos, we didn’t put Cervelo decals on (they weren’t ready yet and the protos are not usually raced, just trained on). After that all riders have gotten their R2.5s with Cervelo decals, but Carlos has stuck with the prototype since he felt comfortable on it.

He’s very much a guy who makes decisions on feel, in fact at first he was not comfortable on the R2.5 and Carlos, Riis and myself spent three hours at the Dauphine fiddling with his position. and now that he’s finally found the sweetspot, he’s reluctant to change bikes and start all over. Even though of course he would be changing to an identical bike.

Anyway, there are now enough orders that we will actually make the “prototype version” available, likely just in time for Christmas. First we have to catch up with the standard version.

Well, there you go, sometimes a little mystery goes a long way.

Still, when a man wins a stage at the Tour, surely it would have been nice to not only have a label on the machine, but maybe even a GIANT NEON LABEL.

We did, but the extension cord wasn’t long enough.
