Santiago Canyon Time Trial Question

Since the Santiago Canyon Time Trial has a hill climb do most people use disc rear wheel or spokes? My HED disc is not that light is why I ask.
Thanks!
Rod

Looks like discs to me. I’ve never done it though.

I always use a disc wheel… in fact, thats me on the starting line

Rod, I assume you plan on racing on Saturday?

I am still going to rough it and race on Sunday at Toms Farms on my road bike, with the Powertap. I guess this will be a good indicator on how aero my bike/position are when I compare it against the same course on Thanksgiving with the new TT bike.

As for Santiago (actually the Curt Sutliff Memorial, named after the promoter of the race who died last year warming up on his trainer at the Fiesta Island TT), it is a very fun course.

Yes, use your disc for sure. Most of the course is rolling, with one climb in the first 1/2 of the race. It is a point-to-point race, 11 miles.

A good strategy is to not go out too hard, start “easy” until you shoot through the tunnel, then turn up the gas. Push hard up the hills and stay in the aerobars on the downhills. Watch the traffic, the semi’s can suck you towards them if you get too close to the white line. There is a bike lane the whole distance, no lights or stop signs.

By the way, I am Gary Tingley, I run www.TimeTrial.org, and the SoCal TT Series.

Good luck, have fun!

Hey, yeah, that is you!

PS, a little birdie told me the proposed date for the USCF states TT is May 28th.

Thanks for the help!

Rod

The first downhill is at about mile 4ish. That usually works to be your time split(give or take a few seconds)… after that climb the speeds are way up(anywhere from about 28-50mph… wind can be a factor also)

I think that it is best to use a disc wheel because it will help out a lot when powering through the rollers. Good Luck!!!

Gary, thanks for the heads-up on the time trial date; thats good to know…

Hey Gary, I’m going to be riding this tomorrow. Looking at the course profile, the “climb” seems to have similar dimensions to Torrey. Is that about right? I’m just trying to guage how much of an effort to put into the first half of the course. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Anyone riding this event on Saturday Oct 14th?

New tt bike? What are you switching to?

It looks like Mike Telega had the fastest time all year at Santiago with a heavy (but aero) Tiemeyer and a disc.

I’ll be there as well. Fun race - Ernie

I wanted to, but I don’t have a TT bike, so I’m going to do the Palm Springs Tram Road Challenge that morning instead. 3.7miles with a claimed 2140’ of vertical, so the road bike should suit me just fine.

Elite nationals are right around the corner and the time trial course is on Santiago Canyon. I was wondering if any locals could tell me there recommended gearing. Right now, I was planning on running a 54 Aero q-ring with an 11-23. Someone was telling me the descents were wicked fast and that I would need a 56. Seems hard to believe… Also, are the climbs big chainring or small? I run a high rpm… Anyone have any powerfiles from the course they would be willing to share? Thanks.

54x11 should work just fine.

Most climbs are big ring.

Hey Gary,

I’m up the road in Chino Hills and want to ride Santiago Canyon. Safe to do solo? Where can I park and ride from? Thanks for your help.

Jon

I have only raced there, always rolled out of Rock N Road Cyclery http://www.rocknroadcyclery.net/
.

Thanks G.

Disc, big ring, the whole deal. The “hill” is pretty minor. I wouldn’t even worry about it. There is a nice, long downgrade at one point. I wouldn’t think twice about using a TT bike. The only race around here that I’ll use anything but a TT bike is the Lake Arrowhead Sprint Tri. Everything else is pretty flat (unless you are from Florida).
