Quick question for those who have raced at Santa Rosa before - I am going to be doing the 70.3 in May and was hoping to set up an RV near the swim start. Any recommendations/tips for this? Would it be best to rent at an actual campground near there? Or does Ironman have an RV-friendly parking area (I’ve seen RVs parked in the Victoria 70.3 Ironman lot for race day in past years)?
Presuming you have not raced it… raced 2018 and tent-camped the night before at Liberty Glen campground.
Lake Sonoma is “out there” away from town. You drive out a road, up the dam, pass T1 then continue for ~10 hilly min to various campsites.
Yes, it would be best to get an actual campsite… there was one small (~20-30 cars) lot across from Bike Out, but it filled super quickly with staff/volunteer cars. We were able to sneak in as one of the last cars after we moved our car down from a campsite race-morning, but I really don’t see them letting an RV stay there overnight (not to mention lack of hook-ups).
The only issue would be getting down from the campsite. Not sure if a family member could drive you down, or you could bring an extra bike to carefully roll down the hill.
Also keep in mind that “regular” people are camping there, so it could get a tad noisy.
