Hey,
I’m thinking of moving to Santa Fe (or a couple other places depending on what I can find)…
What are your thoughts on run training there? A lot of good running?
Thanks for the input

better biking than running because there are endless roads through the mountains and desert. if you like trail running though there is a ton around. just watch out for the rattlers.

A good source for the area. My sister worked there for years, but has recently moved back to Southern California.
SAnta Fe is a good place, lots of trails to run, the ski area is there for some HIGH ALTITUDE running, good mountain biking too. Every year has the Santa fe century and the Santa Fe Hill climb, there a few MTB races there too. A few crossfit gyms and a 10th planet Jiu Jitsu Dojo which is awesome.
You are a short drive from several of the SW series sprint triathons and only about an hour north of ALbuquerque for more events, more riding, better winter riding. You can get up to los alamos for more train running, there is an ultra marthon that takes place there each year, thats just a 40 minute drive.winter ascents of wheeler peak (highest in the state) lots of stuff going on.
As a city, santa fe is ok, lots of amazing restaraunts, swanky but still affordable bars/poolhalls. If you have any more specif questions, I grew up in Los Alamos, worked in SF on many occasions and liived in ABQ for 10 years.
Thanks for the insight everyone!
Would you say that albuquerque or santa fe or los alamos is a better place for living/training?
Just focusing on the run portion of my training big time for the next couple years with some biking here and there as cross training in between and so i dont lose my bike handling skills.
If you were an ultra runner or trail runner, I woud say los alamos, lots of trails, long climbs, big mountains, backcountry trails. You could probably be happy there mountain biking too.
Road biking, theres only really one ride, “the loop” and its only about 35 miles, great ride but you would get bored unles you wanted to do repeats on the ski hill road.
ABQ however is great for training, a bit of altitude, TONS of riding and group rides, trail running in the foothils, several events each year, STer Fartleker owns a running shop there. Some good bike shops etc.
Abq is a great place for triathletes:trails to run, lots of rides of all sorts, flat 20 milers on the river with no traffic all the way to my old 177 mile challenge ride. and lots of pools and gyms.
Albuquerque easily. Santa Fe and Los Alamos are great places for day trips I think, but Albuquerque is the most convenient for all around tri stuff. ABQ is substantially cheaper, too.
That being said, if you are huge into trail running, Santa Fe and Los Alamos probably take the edge.
Well, Santa Fe will get you to run mostly around 7000ft and higher. So that’s a bit of an issue if you want to do some quality intervals. ABQ has a great running community, whereas it’s rather slim in SF. I’d go with ABQ. Not as nice as SF, but you can always head out to SF for a long trail run during the weekends.
cool… I love that ABQ still has good elevation, too and that SF is an hour drive and has more elev. nice!
lifestyle is also an issue: Theres not really any night life in los alamos, one bar that can get roudy. no late night dining options, its a small town and sort of a big-little-city. Bet there is the highest olympic pool in the world there, a public track and lots of trails and quiet neiborhoods to run in.
Santa fe is more posh trendy, kids who grow up in SF are generally fucked up and well versed in sex and drugs by the time the finish school.
Albuquerque is your normal big city but I found it to be very livable and beautiful, lots of pro athletes go there to train, its got everything you could need to train, its actually a fairly big running area with year round outdoor running.

you can easily get over 10k in abq by runnin gon the crest, the la luz trail is famous.
Albuquerque is a nice place to live. The Sandia mountains are a great place to do bike training, and there are significant bike/running trails along Tramway and down through the center of town and along the Rio Grande. About the only thing that sucks in relation to biking is that you should plan to get at least one flat a week as there are tons of goatheads (less if you avoid bike trails).
But, seriously, I really do miss riding in the Sandia and Manzano mountains. Super great riding out there. About the only thing my move to the East Coast gave me was access to far more bike racing and group rides than what was present when I lived in New Mexico.

its beautiful too! except for the time i went up and down too quickly and got altitude sickness. that sucked, i was out of breath and puking my guts out. get acclimated first!

I’ve never been to Santa Fe, but I was in Albuquerque on business a few months back. I was pleasantly surprised by the town and how active the community seemed to be. Fartleker recommended a pretty kick ass running trail along the base of some mountains. To bad my sea level dwelling lungs weren’t ready for a serious run…
especially beautiful if you go when the trees change colors.
There are bigfoot there too which is pretty cool.
Maxis Refuses are a must. No goathead flats in 2 years.
ultra gatorskins too

There are tons of running trails around. You’ll have a great time. The jog up canyon road is great because it’s ALL uphill.
But Veganerd is 100% right about cycling. Santa Fe is a Mecca for cycling. I Ride there at least for a week at a time twice a year. The Santa Fe Ski Basin ride from the plaza is prob my top three rides of all time. Cat 1 climb for 3 miles and Cat 2,3,4 for 16 miles straight. Very very little flats. Pure uphill. Killer.
Hundreds of beautiful miles of riding. Hell. If you want to run though, there is a great running path that I think is 20+ miles near the plaza. Start off at the organic farmers market really great vegan and non vegan bakery inside that serves fucking fantastic breakfast burritos…and the coffee…ahhh…the market is a short hop to the trail I speaks of.
Pm me, and I’ll shoot you over all the info.
Santa Fe is a very special town.

Take your bike. Please. :-/

Uh, yeah. I did that climb this summer (not going to divulge my time). That was rough. At the steep section near the campground area I got passed by two African marathoners running < 6:00 pace. There was no way I could keep up.
I really enjoyed Santa Fe, a lot.
I told my wife she should make some jewlery before our next trip out there. We could sell in the square & make a killing!

I found this today when I read your post. You might appreciate it.

There are tons of running and trails all on the way. This is some serious awesome cycling. God I miss it.
