Can anyone recommend a running coach in the San Jose area - that does in-person coaching sessions (at least initially) and then possibly put together a sensible running plan (for 10ks, and half Marathon distances, though I would eventually like to be able to train for another marathon)
I’m thinking I need to do something different in order to be able to actually run (with a training purpose/plan) and not get injured all the time. Maybe someone to watch me run and potentially work on my form first, then speed/distance etc.
I’ve been running for a long time. I used to ‘just’ run before I got into triathlons. I knew how to train for races when I was younger and didn’t get injured so frequently. But the last 3 years have been about ‘how to do the minimal running in order to make it to race day in decent condition’. So of course, my pace/times have suffered. I’d like to change that. Currently, I have been able to run regularly but there are always little aches that start to turn into injuries whenever I push the pace or distance etc.
He is primarily a long distance a tri coach but he also has “just runner” clients. He’s a great runner himself with a track background. Since he’s been coaching me I dropped my half marathon PR by 13 minutes, and my half iron run is now faster than my open half marathon PR used to be. Touch wood I’ve also remained free of running injuries for the past 2 years. Don’t expect a super fast response, though, as he’s in the midst of his kona prep…
Tom McGlynn is on the peninsula and runs San Francisco Tri’s track workouts. I know he used to do in-person coaching - he’s now involved with an online coaching program, Runcoach. It may be worthwhile to check with Runcoach to see if Tom’s available for in-person, too. Tom’s great. He’s very positive, personal, knowledgeable, and has quite a resume!
I work with Martin Spierings. I am working with him for triathlons, but he also is working with some people going for BQs. He only takes on a few athletes, and I communicate with him almost daily during the season, and a few times a week during the offseason. He lives near Santa Cruz, I live in Oakland.
