San Francisco Cycling Routes

I’m visiting SF next week and planning to rent a bike. I’m looking to get in a 30 - 45 mile ride departing from the Presidio area / Sports Basement or similar location. I’ve heard that the route from there to Tiburon is a great one. Could anyone guide me towards detailed maps / instructions or other suggestions for routes?

Another question: Can you ride through Golden Gate park and put in some mileage, similar to the 6-mile loop that you can complete in New York City’s Central Park, or is it not worth doing so?

Thank you.

Just watch out for the MTB trails in Marin County. You can use Strava Routes to check road type and also overlay the heatmap.

Here is your most popular ~40mi loop to Tiburon and back.

No need to loop GG Park more than once…too many great rides out here to play hamster.

The escape from Alcatraz triathlon bike route is another good ride that will take < hour and a half or so (and gives you a half loop of GGP). Watch out for cars and people backing out of parking spaces, especially near the Cliff House and on weekends.

Enjoy.

Also Hawk Hill loop is about an hour and beautiful. Be careful of the backside as the majestic beauty can distract you from paying attention to the steep, curvy descent.

I’ve done some riding while visiting the area, and I’m not familiar enough to give you specific directions, but consider something including the ascent of Mt Tam (Tamalpais) and/or the loop down through Stinson Beach.

I agree Paradise loop + Hawk Hill is a good one if you are starting from Sports Basement. Should be around 40 miles or so. Just get out on the GG Bridge early to avoid any crowds.

Hawk Hill (Short climb but great views of the city. After the bridge just make a left and head up to the top and come back down to do Paradise Loop)

If you are looking for some open water swimming check out Aquatic Park. This is where open water training takes place for most of us in the city. Bring the wetsuit.

This information is really helpful, thank you. I’m riding from Fisherman’s Wharf and I love the idea of a ride out to Tiburon and back. The link below to the directions wasn’t working. Does anyone happen to have detailed directions on how to ride from Fisherman’s Wharf to Tiburon and back? If I didn’t take the ferry back, I presume this is about a 40-mile ride roundtrip?

Thank you.

You should take a bus up to marin and go to point reyes with sir Francis drake blvd, that place is what’s up more than 40mi but soooo worth. Intervals on the tt bike at golden gate is always fun too I like to take the bart out and go from there too

Do the roasters ride from the gg bridge. Get thee to marin, don’t mess around with gg park traffic. If you want shorter, do paradise loop. Or hawk hill/marin headlands.
