I am going to be in San Diego for a few days and I’m looking for suggestions on larger triathlons stores that are centrally located. I will be staying in Mission Valley without a car, so somewhere that I can get to easily with public transport or a short cab ride would be great. Thanks.
Neither of those (Nytro and B$L) are a short cab ride from where you are but they are near one another. Probably a couple of the best tri shops in the nation. Great burritos down the road at Fillibertos too.
speaking of … I was just up “your way” a while ago and stopped into a running store across the street from the Encinitas Nytro (Movin’ shoes or something). Do you know the thin, serious looking running guy there? He mentioned that he has done a couple of Ironmans as well. Very helpful and we seem to have the exact same shoe size and taste in shoes (but not speed I’m afraid).

I checked out the B&L link that TriBodyBoarder kindly provided, and it looked like they had a location in San Diego that is pretty close to where I’m staying?
I have not lived in the area for a few years now. The Navy decided that I needed a tour down in Pensacola and now in Patuxent River, MD. I have been trying to get back to that area for years now. I remember that running shop well. I have bought shoes and other items there. I used to run by there quite often on my weekend running loop. Good times.

Gordy at Movin’ Shoes. He’s also the Cross Country track coach at San Dieguito - good guy, knows his stuff. He did IM Hawaii quite a few years back.
B&L San Diego Store is very close to where you will be. However it is a Specialized concept store, and I don’t think has the selection of the Solana Beach store, which is right across from the Solana Beach train station. You can catch the Coaster at Old Town Transit Center to get there.
Nytro should also be reachable from the Coaster, with a little bit of a walk through downtown Encinitas.
Moment Cycle Sport is a small tri shop in Point Loma that opened this past year. It is located further down Rosecrans between Harbor Dr and Shelter Island Dr.
B&L and Nytro are both good stores, nothing against them.
That said, Adams Avenue Bicycles is an AWESOME shop. The owner, Andrew, worked at B&L for a long time, before moving on and opening his own shop. It’s the only shop in town that has not only incredible service, and an awesome working relationship with everyone else in town, but will gladly serve you a cold frosty, of the Stone, or other micro-type variety while you’re perusing, or just stopping in to say hello. Also, you never know when Chris Allen, the regional Specialized rep may stop in. ANYTHING that I have needed, Andrew has been able to track down in hours. And… he thought he was exclusively into the roadie fixie crew, until the Tri Geeks showed up, and demanded more from his shop. He’s upping the anti and will stock more tri stuff. And… It’s close to you in Mission Valley. But, overall, it’s like Cheers at a bike shop.
I’ve also had great service, from Casper Rubalcava over at UC Cyclery. Not real close, but closer than Nytro. He’s running a great shop over there.
B&L San Diego is the best all around in my opinion. HUGE selection, not just Specialized, but they are a Spec concept store. A mix of tri, road, and MTB all price ranges PLUS incredible service. Easy to find, right off the interstate.
if you can, take the coaster or amtrak surfliner from the commuter rail at ketner / downtown or, even closer to mission valley, take the coaster from old town to encinitas. from the encinitas station it is a few short blocks … or from solana beach, give us a call and we will come pick you pick or take the short cab ride 3 miles north to Nytro.
