San Diego Long Ride Advice

I’m looking for advice/routes for long rides in San Diego. I just relocated (again) to San Diego from Phoenix, AZ and besides Fiesta Island and heading up the coast to Carlsbad, I’m not sure where to ride.

I got lucky and scored a nice place in La Jolla Village, less than a ¼ mile from the cove, so my swimming needs will be taken care of. In AZ, I was spoiled on being able to hop on my bike from my front door and ride for miles. I would like to be able to do the same thing here, heading inland for some long rides.
