San Clemente Ca climbing route?

Doing an Oceanside pre ride and would like to add a hill or two (or repeats) after the frontside. Not familiar with San Clemente other than riding through, I see roads like Avenida Pico that look to climb a bit. Anyone ridden there or can suggest a route? R/t to Oceanside will take up most of my miles so can’t really go to Dana point or inland

I know there is not much “there” there, doesn’t need to be a long climb but something with some elevation on decent roads…

Is pre riding the course the only option? If you ride south from Oceanside, or inland on the bike path you will get hills. Plenty of them on most rides, the Pendleton ride is known as one of the flattest rides in North County.

Yeah, I haven’t done the course since 2013 and, though it’s not technical, I always like to get a ride in there before the race. If all I want to do is hills I’ve got plenty out the back door here in Torrance. Agree that Pendleton is flat, was just curious if there’s a somewhat decent place (or even “a” place  ) to gt some elev.

I got one for you. The hill that mimics the climb on Camp P is Salvador. Park on Christianitos and work your way along the back of the gulf course up to the base of the climb. There are several hills in the area that are equally challenging. Acapulco and Miguel. I would ride up Acapulco 1st, then ride up Salvador, ride to the bottom, left on Miguel back to the top. Check out a map for the full details.

We have the ‘four peaks of SC’… https://www.strava.com/activities/510641393
The fourth peak is not shown (ran out of sun), at mile 31 hang a left up Calle del Cerro, then stay right up and around Avenida Vista Montana.

Thanks, that was perfect. Went up and over salvador and back, and then ended up at Acapulco somehow (kinda cool you can see the Christianitos gate from the top). That one pitch on Salvador is a bitch

If you head up to the end of Pico, you’ll reach the neighborhood of Talega. There are a few good hills for repeats up there of varying grades. Pedriza (connecting at the end of Pico) is one of the steepest, while Avenida Talega is a good steady climb with a good bike lane and low traffic (unless during school hours). If you are daring, you can climb Vista Hermosa from the outlets inland, but the lanes are skinny, and people tend to veer into the bike lane frequently. Best of luck in Oceanside!
