I’m a “salter” and like my salt stick tablets. But I’m starting to just mix it in the flask and wanted a powder . I don’t want the hammer product b/c 40 mg of Na per serving is just absurd. I can’t find any information on what is really in the lava salts powder. Does anyone have information on the actual content of the lava salts and how it compares to the salt stick tablets?
As I gear up for the first IM (LP) I’m going through product left and right. Amazing how much fuel, water, salt etc you need for the longer workouts.
No idea about Lava Salts, but I have acquired all the raw ingredients to home brew my own salt sticks. I too am tired of pulling apart those little capsules by the dozens and pouring the contents into whatever witch’s brew I am experimenting with at the moment.
It’s all right there on the supplement facts label. Hell, the Salt Sticks label even tells you the source of the electrolytes.
Sorry if this constitutes a hijack, but does anyone know why they use sodium chloride in regular Salt Sticks and sodium citrate in the Salt Sticks Plus? Any advantage to one over the other? I know for mixing in liquids the sodium citrate is less “salty” for a given amount of sodium which is good given the amount of sodium I am consuming during long sessions.
well as someone who spent monday night weighing out maltodextrin to get my bike fuel “just right” I’m intrigued by the idea of bulk salts. I went through 23 salt stick tabs yesterday, I need a better way !
where did you get your raw material? I can easily use table salt, but the Na-citrates, magnesium salts etc are more of a challenge.
Citrates are acid buffers that slightly reduce or keep more steady blood ph. The performance benefit is that keeping blood ph from rising allows one to go harder before blood lactic acid reaches your lactic threshhold. I do not think the doses in any commercially available product can be harmful. But if you are making your own mix, PLEASE be very careful, because large doses of acid buffers could send your blood ph outside (lower than) the normal range which can result in death.
Some comapnies use sodium citrate, some use potassium citrate, some use calcium carbonate (which is the main ingredient in TUMS, by the way). Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) also has a similar effect. Too much of any of them can cause gastric distress (and of course death).
purebulk.com. I had to get a little scale too since the food scale I use to measure my maltodextrin will not read better than one gram and that is a hell of a lot of magnesium (not to mention maybe a toxic dose of caffeine).
I spent about $100 but that got me enough raw materials at least until I age up into 50-54. That’s about the cost of three big bottles of salt sticks. I have drained a number of those bad boys during long training sessions ithe Texas heat and humidity.
By the way, you could check the nutritional facts on
Pink Himalyan Sea Salt
And see if it matches close to your desired need. I am pretty sure that the exact nutritionals would vary, since it is mined, not mixed. But it does have traces of several minerals.
I have purchased some from Spicelab.com (although I bought mine for table use, not training use).
I don’t have to make more home brew and I’m fine to use the lava salts powder. I just wanted to know what’s in it.
My new favorite and I do not have to take near as many as other brands I used.
