Salt lake City Swimming and Working Out?

All…I will be at the Doubletree hotel next week for work and looking for places to swim and work out. Any suggestions? Is there a YMCA there? The Y website for Utah is worthless.

Thanks

Where is the hotel? At the airport or downtown?

I don’t have a lot of advice for swimming venues downtown, I’ve heard the Jewish Community Center or Steiner Aquatic up on the U of U campus are good. The Gym at City Creek allegedly has a pool as well right downtown.

For running or cycling I can give you all kinds of ideas for routes depending on whether or not you wish to climb or stay flat, and how far you’d like to go.

You could also go up to the University of Utah Student Life Center (University Gym) on campus. It costs 6 bucks for a daily guest pass, and you get access to the 50m lap pool, giant weight room, spin bikes, treadmills, indoor track, etc…There’s also the outdoor track directly across the street. The pool has specific hours (I think 0600-0800, 1100-1300, then evening hours) and its got 6 or 8 full lanes if I remember correctly. Parking will be a little bit of a beast, but google free parking at the U and you should find something, especially during the summer.

I worked as cadre for the ROTC program there for a bit, and really love that gym. It’s almost a one stop shop for triathletes (indoor training anyways). Outdoor running and you can hit the Bonneville Shoreline trail, or run laps around Liberty Park (1.5 mile loop) which is also very nice, and the scenery is always good if you know what I mean.

I live up in Park City, 20 minutes from Salt Lake. Oddly enough, there are more pools in the SLC area than any other city I have visited.

Here are my favorite pools:

Each of these pools also has a masters program, although the masters swimming in Utah is average at best.

There are also a dozen other pools in Salt Lake - see http://slco.org/...uatics/aquatics.html

In terms of working out, the Salt Lake Sports Complex, Kearns Aquatic Center, Cottonwood Heights Aquatic Center and Mark Pool in Park City all have gyms with cardio, weights, spin classes, etc. The Salt Lake Sports Complex is the closest facility to the Doubletree.

I would drive up to Park City if you have a few hours - you can swim in the outdoor pool at the Marc until 7 PM or at the Ecker Pool until 9 PM and then run on any of the 500 miles of trails (flat, hill, mountains, etc.). You could also rent a mountain bike and ride some of the best trails in the world. You also have the option of renting a road bike - there are plenty of flat, rolling hills or epic climbs to choose from and all are pretty safe with limited traffic or wide bike lanes. I have lived in some of the best training venues (NoCal, SoCal, Tucson, Scottsdale, Vermont, New Zealand) and I think Park City and the surrounding areas has the best training options anywhere - plus you get the benefit of training at 6,500 - 10,000 feet.

SLC Sports Complex.

there used to be a masters group (6-7 am MWF) at the high school in Mill Creek. I swam there several summers ago.

Someone else linked it but the Steiner Aquatic complex is awesome. Outdoor 50m pool.

All…Thanks for the great info.

Is the Steiner Aquatic Complex the same place as the slc sports complex?

When I google Steiner I get the SLC sports complex

Thanks again.

I believe so. It’s right by the university

Willbill, not to highjack this thread but. . . . I am visiting Park City next week with family. Can you suggest any can’t miss hikes, or climbs. I just got back from Cusco Peru so I am somewhat acclimated. Of course beauty plus some decent climbs would be awesome! Someone mentioned Iron mountain hike? We will be there for a full week so am open to any suggestions.
