Gang, if you have used in the past, or currently used Salomon shoes for dry ROCKY and ROOT filled trail running, which are your favorite for protection and light weight? Just went through a pair of LaSportiva Helios and they have super grips but not good on rocks as there is little underfoot protection (a bit soft when you step on a root or rock). Let me have your reviews as their lineup looks well made.
Why limited to Salomon? You should look at Inov8 too.
Herbert, I’ve gone through the Adidas & Hoka, LaSportiva route for trail shoes, I like to experiment. Salomon were just the ones I was next most interested in, but there are so many models–it’s nice to get some tester’s info who spent time in them for info you don’t normally see in the descriptions or reviews.
I’m sure INOV8 will come along down the line.
I mostly run in the Terraclaw 250, but this shoe should find you well

Solomon pro wing 2. I have been wearing solomon and la sportivo for 5 years of ultras. For anything long or rocky i use solomon. My feet just do not get tired. No soreness. 50k’s on up on technical terrain. They are all I use for that distance.
Rocky trails is what I’d be running on, so a meta-shank or protection underfoot is needed. Just looked at the INOV Roclite 305 & it is close to what sounds what I need, but I’m going to have to try on a lot of shoes to get one that I like. The LaSportiva Helios had webbing fall apart after just a few heavy duty rocky trail runs (plus there wasn’t a lot of underfoot protection but did have fantastic grip/treads) the entire length.
My last 50k was The Rut loose skree, a lot of it. Also Bridger Ridge run. If my feet were protected thru those two…anything then. Look em up… good luck
The Speedcross Pro has enough grip and protection for me on Oahu’s technical trails, which are plenty rocky and rooty. Comfy, light, well-built. They are great shoes.
Just registering my interest in this as I am due a new pair of trail shoes …
For really muddy stuff I like the speedcross (I have the 3) but they wear quick for all year round use / harder surfaces - they really do suit the softer terrain.
Currently undecided between ‘Speedcross vario’ and the Scott ‘kinabalu supertrac’. Both seem to suit my requirement, both can be found at good discounts … (in the uk)

I have used speedcrosses for the last 5 years. They do alright for scrambling. Great on dirt, mud and snow. I use them for hiking and trail running. I have converted several friends and we all swear by them now. Make the switch and you’ll be happy. They fit pretty true so I size up just a bit as on long trail runs my feet swell and eventually can start to blister my pinky toe if I don’t size up. The tread wears fairly quick so like I said I go through at least one pair a year and the normal trail running season where I live is July-Oct.
Second that. Love the Salomon speedcross, I use the waterproof ones as my winter running shoes – also use them on gnarly trail runs in the fall.

Mind sharing where are you finding the good deals for trail shoes in the UK? Online vendor or your local shop?
The S-Lab Sense SGs are on every other persons feet out here in Montana. Heel cups give me crazy blisters, otherwise I’d be wearing them too.
Sportsshoes.com for the speedcross, if your not fussy on colour you can have 4’s for £60 and vario’s for £50, that’s approx 50% rrp. Got to be lucky with deals and sizes though. If you have small feet also check the women’s colours, my first pair were black and coral (which is really a deep pink !).
The vario’s can be had off the shelf in sports direct for £75.
The Scott’s are a bit tricker to find but size / colour dependant they come up for under £60. Some deals on eBay at the moment for an older colour scheme but from UK trading shops.
Don’t buy speedcross on eBay, lots of copies around, just ask my bro …
Snow and rock sell (or at least did sell) speedcross and they would price match online prices for the same size and colour, if it was in stock.
Keep an eye on cotsworld outdoor for the occasional crazy deal / stock clearance - I picked my last lot of speedcross 3 up from there (as did my sister and her other half) for £30 a pair, odd colourways but they all look the same covered in crap lol

I loved my S-Lab Sense (regular, not SG) until I lost one of the pair (!!!). I have the SG version now and they just don’t do it for me - but they are much better for mud. Doesn’t matter for dry trails though so I would recommend the regular S-Lab Sense. In white if you are REALLY fast. Otherwise Red.

I like my slab Sense SG, but that SG stands for Soft Ground…so I’d advise against these for the OP’s question.
The Speedcross line is really good, but as noted, there are so many versions it is hard to keep straight. I have some of the varios and they were cheap (<$70 for last years). I believe they are the lowest model, followed by Speedcross, then Speedcross Pro? I think that is how it goes? With everything Solomon, when you add S-Lab to the end, it jumps $100 and gets a little lighter.
The good thing about Solomon is that you can get great deals by buying last year’s models. The bad thing is that there are plenty of sources which sell either complete knockoff or low QC night shifts. (Aliexpress sold speedcrosses for $35. I got a pair and they are crap.) So, buy from a site you’ve heard of before.
Bozeman huh? Man you guys are a bunch of studs. I did the ridge run and rut this year…wish i had your terrain to train on. I am in Billings, every weekend i go to the mnts, you have in back yard
Thank you very much…bookmarked!
