Safe to run...good running in Camps Bay, Cape Town, SA?

Hi Slowtwitch family,
Anyone a resident of Cape Town, or specifically Camps Bay, and feel safe running? I’m going to be staying on Strathmore Lane for 3 weeks and want to run a lot. Also, any recommendations for open air (preferable) or indoor 50m pools?
Cheers

I am not a resident of CT, but I grew up in So. Africa and I travel back there quite regularly. Camps Bay is awesome for running - I normally stay at The One &Only in the Harbor next to the Aquarium and run all along the sea wall through Sea Point, past Bantry Bay & Clifton and down to Camps Bay and back. That’s about 20km I believe for the out & back. I have never run from Camp’s Bay in the other direction (towards Lundudna) but I think it would be a pretty cool run. There is a wide shoulder on the road, but I always run early morning before it get’s busy. When the tourist in a rental car (and not to mention the local mini bus taxi’s) start to come out, a lot of strange things can happen

As for swimming, there is a great outdoor 50m pool in Sea Point that will cost you about ZAR 10 to use ($1.50). Check out this link http://www.capeswim.com/seapointpool.htm. If you want to swim in a 25m indoor pool, there is a Virgin Active Club in Green Point - behind the Soccer Stadium. Can’t remember what a day pass costs, but check out their website http://www.virginactive.co.za/clubs/view/16#timetables.

Good luck and enjoy CT. I love that city, definitely one of my favorites.
PS don’t leave any valuables in your car while at the pool

thank you very much
sounds like safety during the daytime isn’t really an issue?

x1

I was there in december and january, ran the sea point wall daily to camps bay and back, very safe with day light. Also swam in the outdoor pool. It’s umm refreshing but nice. I think it opens at 7 so get there early before it gets busier to get a good swim in.

Yes, for the most part safety is not a major concern in the daytime. Like any big city however, you need to be cautious and be alert. Be careful if you decide to go run around the base of Table Mountain - it is awesome with the most amazing views. Do that in a large group, I have heard of some mtb’ers and runners getingt their stuff jacked at knife point.

The beauty of Cape Town is that being so touristy, there is a large police presence and generally the running route I described is busy with other runners and cyclists and also a lot of local residents walking dogs etc.

Enjoy, I am jealous…but I will be down there for 3 weeks in December for a family wedding.
