Margo’s voice + the spare guitar + the dragging drum beat = perfection

Good Lord this thread is depressing!
Just posting a YT link to skip most of the lyrics to get to the saddest guitar riffs I know.

Jason Isbell and Frank Turner have been mentioned already and they are to two songwriters that can really depress me. It would add Brian Fallon to that list.
Another Frank Turner song I can barely listen to:

I would also add this from the Lumineers:
Whiskey Lullaby is pretty sad. But given the backstory it’s hard to beat Tears in heaven.
“Changes in Latitude†is more wistful than sad but knowing Jimmy is gone moves it to sad.
say so much

Anybody ready for a suicide yet? Those are indeed sad songs. No song in particular but listening to Linda Ronstadt for more than 15 minutes has to be a contender. She had some pretty sad ones in the pile and not many happy ones. Cathy hit it on the head with Jimmy Buffett. Several of his songs seem a lot sadder with him gone.
The first time I became aware of this song was when it was the backing track for a Danny McKaskill video, so I don’t get the intended negative vibes.
I find Cat Stevens songs depressing.
I’ll also add Mike & The Mechanics Living Years

I love Band of Horses. Almost everything by them makes me melancholy, in a somewhat good way. The combination of haunting lyrics and when I came to know them…hits the right combo.
