Running with a Springer Spaniel?

Just planning ahead for a 5 month old male (and me, to get him tuckered out before taking him to the office)…any one have an English Springer that they run with?

Can you tell me how far and how often?

Other tips?

Thanks!

I have a lab and he refuses to go run with me, sees me with my sneakers and goes into hiding…

Good luck with that, ours had unlimited energy!!!

he is fat…

We named our Rat Terrier after Tegla Loroupe and the dog does exactly the same, if she sees me with my running outfit, she hides under the stairs. She has been doing this for 12 years now! Beside this is is a fantastic dog! She is quite playfull but doesn t want to run.

My Springer is coming up on a year & a half and I’ve recently started to take her out for 1-2 mile runs. When it gets cooler I plan to take her out longer but she’s kind of a nightmare on a leash. Mostly my fault for letting her pull the kids (and me) around the block on a ripstick. She absolutely loves it & takes off like she’s shot out of a cannon, but it doesn’t help when it comes to running for more than 5-10 minutes. She needs to work on pacing - a lot. Most of her exercise comes from swimming - she would stay in the pool all day if we let her.

I wish you the best over the first year. If you haven’t had a Springer before don’t give up hope - they eventually mellow out (sort of).

It’s recommended you wait at least until 9 months until you start running with a dog, some people say wait 12 months. Your pup is still growing and you can seriously injure or even cripple him.

Consider the fact that your dog is kinda small and isn’t built for long distances so forgot about doing long runs with him. I know a runner who has an italian greyhound and a whippet. Both of these are “running dogs” but that doesn’t mean you can do a marathon with either. On 5K runs he takes both but anything over that, the italian greyhound stays at home. Also make sure to make water available to the dog as much as possible. Unlike humans, they can’t sweat and only exchange heat through their mouth. They can easily overheat.

Our springers about 18months old, I used to jog with her on the beach from about 9months (only about 3-5km). Once she hit 12months I started running with her on trails. I built her running up as you would a human, starting with 30min runs building up to 1.5 to 2 hour runs. I don’t run more than 10km with her on concrete though.

She absolutely loves it and can keep going for hours and also has a resting heart rate of 90bpm!!! Oh I’m such a proud father

Definitely agree with waiting until they are 12months before any running on concrete and be sensible with them!

Do be careful if it is hot outside. Our neighbor took their yellow lab for a walk. It was not even a run. The dog was only 2 years old and not over weight. The dog died of heat stroke. It was too bad that they waited a couple of hours after the walk to consult my wife. She knew what was wrong and got it to her uncle that is a vet as quickly as possible. But it was still too late. If it had been handled more quickly the dog would have survived.

What are the chances but the almost same thing happen to another one of our neighbors. My wife convered the dog with cold towels and took it to a emergency room vet that is relatively close to our house. The dog was fine.
