Running TSS formula clarification

Calculating running TSS based on the formula @ http://home.trainingpeaks.com/blog/article/running-training-stress-score-rtss-explained

How is NGP expressed? If it’s minutes/mile or minutes/km, doesn’t that mean as NGP increases (i.e. you get slower), that TSS increases?

Calculating running TSS based on the formula @ http://home.trainingpeaks.com/...score-rtss-explained

How is NGP expressed? If it’s minutes/mile or minutes/km, doesn’t that mean as NGP increases (i.e. you get slower), that TSS increases?

Yes as your NGP rises (aka you get faster) towards your threshold pace your IF will increase and TSS will increase. That is how it is supposed to work.

Yep, perhaps I’m not understanding how NGP is expressed though?

Consider for instance, if your threshold pace is 4 min/mile.

6 min / mile NGP for 1hr
((3600 * 6 * (6 / 4)) / (4 * 3600)) * 100 = 225 TSS

8 min / mile NGP for 1hr
((3600 * 8 * (8 / 4)) / (4 * 3600)) * 100 = 400 TSS

Meaning, the slower pace incurred a greater TSS?

Speed in MPH (or KM/hr)

IF = NGP divided by your FTP so 6min/mile would be 0.66666 (10 / 15) and 8min/mile would be 0.5 (7.5 /15)

rTSS = (3600 * 10 * 0.666666) / (15 * 3600) * 100 = 44 and a bit

rTSS = (3600 * 7.5 * 0.5) / (15 *3600) * 100 = 25
.

That was the missing piece. Thanks for the clarification.

Isn’t the updated factor ~111 instead of 100?

That depends on how you determined your functional threshold pace. Most people base this on the average pace for a 10K race which for the majority of people is significantly less than 1 hour (40-50min). If your FTP is based on a 60min all out effort then using a factor of 111 or 112 would apply.

Quick question… with rTSS vs. TSS from biking, I know 100 TSS on the bike equates to 1 hour at FTP. Does 100 rTSS equate to 1 hour at threshold pace? 1 hour at threshold NGP?

Yes, according to my understanding (double-check my working below). Let’s say your threshold pace is 15kpmh (i.e. you tested it for an hour last week). You run again this week and do 15kpmh for an hour. I have assumed a completely flat course for simplicity. Your TSS calc would be:

((3600 * 15 * 1) / (15 * 3600)) * 100 = 100

(( sec of workout * graded pace * IF) / (threshold pace * 3600) ) * 100 = rTSS

Yes, rTSS uses NGP.

Excuse me, shouldn’t 1hr at 1 IF equal 112 TSS?
