I don’t eat a lot of pasta or bread just because I don’t love how it makes me feel after I eat it. However, life gets in the way sometimes, and I’ll have some pasta or bread for dinner. I always minimize my portions if I do, but I’ll still eat it.
My question is this: if I run the morning after eating either pasta or bread, about 20-25 minutes into my run, I’ll get light-headed, and my legs get a little wobbly. I’m generally able to run through it, but it takes about 5-10 minutes to work itself out. What the heck is happening? It feels like a massive bonk, but I know that’s not it.
interesting to me that its the morning after your blood sugar should have stabilized by the morning. Any other contributing factors maybe? anything for breakfast?
This is my N=1 powered by Broscience. I find if I eat really carb heavy dinner (or demolish a pint of ice cream at night) the next morning I wake up really hungry and it takes a while for the engine to get going. I don’t get light-headed but I do have an initial WTF is wrong with me warm-up period.
I intermittently follow the Metabolic Efficiency approach and notice when I’m all-in on that approach I don’t have the same issue (although that doesn’t mean I have zero issues). By no means scientific and it may be self-confirmation bias but what you said chimes with my experience.

I totally agree with that. I would’ve thought it would have been metabolized well before a run the following morning.
I can’t eat before I run. I have a cup of coffee with a little milk and a little sugar. But I do that every day, and I don’t get the same waves of lightheadedness that I do post pasta/bread.
what is your usual supper meal? rice or some other non-gluten carb?
i agree that your pasta/bread supper should have been mostly digested by morning. maybe you have slower-than-average digestive system?
could it be something related, eg cheese-based sauce on the pasta?
I haven’t had the light-headed thing after a past/bread supper, although i had a very unpleasant experience during a marathon after carbo-loading with half a loaf of whole wheat bread the night before. that was a really, really bad idea.

I don’t think so. Just feel too full, and makes me feel sluggish immediately after eating it. And this sort of reaction during my run only reinforces my desire to NOT eat those things. Because, really, who wants to screw up the opportunity for a solid run?
I opened this thread fully expecting to read about having to take a massive $#!& mid run. That’s the only negative side effect I have from carb loading.

Eat more pasta and bread. Starches are best thing you can eat.

I used to get the exact same symptoms on my morning run. I changed to not eating at all before the run. Maybe one gel for runs over an hour. Also check your hydration. I have also thought that played a role into it as well.

It usually consists of a protein and vegetables. Occasionally it will include a starch like rice in a risotto or rice/beans. But really, mostly protein and veggies.

You may be prone to a bit of post-prandial hypoglycemia, combine that with the increased glucose uptake of exercising muscles and blood sugar may get a little low. Not eating isn’t exactly the best solution. Try a meal a bit higher in fat / protein and fiber to reduce insulin spike.
I’ve experienced the same symptoms you’ve described, except usually after I have oatmeal and coffee before a long run. The first time I experienced this I was concerned, things were super dizzy, blurry and very lightheaded. It cleared up quickly and I was on my way. It has happened since a few times over the last few years and always after oatmeal and coffee. I think xtrapickles is right, it has something to do with blood sugar and possibly the caffeine in my case. If it ever happens now, I just keep running and plow right through it, it always seems to get better in a few minutes.
Thanks for that info. I just went and looked it up, and does seem to fit what’s happening to me. I’m wondering if I’m not taking in too much sugar during the day, and that, coupled with the carbohydrates, is throwing my body off.
Been there done that with the dizziness and weak legs. I have found that a lite breakfast of bacon and eggs only(no bread or taters) is the cure for me. This probably supports xtrpickles post. Just a few slices of bacon sometimes works too(protein and fats).
