Running shoes for Michigan winter

I will be spending a good deal of time over the next few months focusing on my run. I do have a treadmill in my basement, but would like to run outside as much as possible.

Currently I run in Asics Nimbus, and they have treated me well especially since i have orthotics, but they are just not suited to the cold and wet of the impending winter.

Anybody have any thoughts on a good winter shoe? I used to run in Montrail Hurricane and liked them, but that was before I had the orthotics, and I don’t know if they would be suited to me anymore.

The Saucony Grid Omni has a trail version that might be a good fit. I recall them being as roomy as the Nimbus, maybe more. Worth a look anyway. You may want to check out the selection on www.zappos.com, they pay return shipping if the shoes don’t work for you. Buy a few pair you’re interested in, return the ones you don’t like for a full refund.

smartwool socks turn any shoe into a winter shoe…

is nimbus a cushioning shoe? If so then the brooks cascadia would be one to try.

I’m worried more about the wet than the cold. I know that Montrail, and Solomon make Gore-Tex shoes for this purpose, but does anybody else?

Nothing like getting a soaker 5 miles from home on a 32 deg day.

I have used the Adidas Supernova Winterized, as well as the trail version of the Supernova and liked them both.

I would probley get an older pair of moonboots. Think about how strong you would be in the spring if you ran with moonboots all winter. also break glass in the bottom of them before each run to toughen your feet. where in Michigan you at?

Detroit suburbs. Man, moon boots would be Sweet!

I never changed shoes when I ran through the winter in Michigan. I did get a head lamp (Petzl), so that if I ran in the dark I could avoid the puddles.

I wear Asics 2100s (or 2110s or whatever they are this year) year round in Michigan. You will rarely get your feet soaking wet while running here in the winter. It’s fairly unusual to have lots of large puddles around, maybe only when you have a lot of rain when the temps are barely above freezing so the ground stays frozen while the water collects on top. If it’s really cold everything is frozen so wet doesn’t matter too much, and you just have to avoid hitting patches of ice.

I just bought some Salomon GCS XCR for winter running. I also plan on doing some adventure racing and figured I would kill 2 birds with one stone - not many runs in them yet, but so far, very comfy.

Duct tape over the front mesh parts of the Nimbus works pretty well here in upstate ny. Also helps on the bike shoes this time of year.

MukLuks. (or however they’re spelled.) cozy!
