Running races in late feb/early march Albuquerque

Anyone know of any good ones? any distance is fine - longer = better

Thanks!

I was sitting on the bus at last weekend’s very wet marathon, overheard a sligtly cooky lady talking about a marathon in Tuscon in January and then there was one in February in Albuquerque… I didn’t varify it via a search, but I did hear of at least two marathons in the area slightly close to your time frame, from a maybe not very reliable source. Yeah I know vague…

No half marathons/marathons then that I know of. I think there is a 10 miler around St Patrick’s day. The weather is VERY unpredictable and can be windy then, so race directors don’t like to do much.

awesome thanks!

can anyone recommend a centrally located area to stay (hotel) b/c I want to be able to get some quality training in while out there. any ideas?

Welcome, we are pretty spread out in Albuquerque as you well know by now if you have spent anytime here. So, with that being said I would choose a hotel around Jefferson and I-25 on the WEST side of the interstate. This would offer premuim proximity to the North Diversion Trail which is a dedicated bike trail that can connect you with everything you need. Tramway road is wondefull option for cycling as well as the Bosque.

In terms of running I enjoy the trails at the base of the Sandia Mountains. There are numerous entry points East of Tramway road from Montgomery and each road North. Maps are located at numerous shops around town, but ABQ Running Shop is the really the only place to go in that regard.

Other running options are the Albuquerque Academy loop that challenges you to a 3.2 mile run with moderate climb (3-4%) grade for a mile. I also recommend the UNM North Golf Course loop. A two mile journey that runs along the golf course with some rolling hills.

Other then that, check out mapmyrun or bike for other recommended options.

Its always sunny in Albuquerque,

Derek

If you can make a 3-hour drive, there’s the Pecos Valley Stampede in Roswell on Feb 23, 2013. It’s a small event (50 or so running the half-marathon and another 100-200 folks who show up for the 10k or 2-mile runs). They stagger the start times so that all of the races end about the same time, so it feels like a slightly bigger event.

And after the race, you can swing by the UFO Museum!
