Running in Wilmington, DE

I’m going to be in Wilmington, DE/Newark, DE all of next week and need to get plenty of running in. I can do road runs when needed, but wanted to hit up the ST collective to see if there are specific routes that are great and especially if there are trail routes I should look out for.

Thank you,

I wasn’t there for long, but I did a couple of runs out at Bellevue State Park. Pretty flat, nice scenery and a 1 mile and change “fitness track”.

North Wilmington

…try to get to the Green way http://www.delawaregreenways.org/media/ndgtrail.pdf
Mostly macadam multi use trail - some crushed stone.

Brandywine State park and the Woodlawn Trustees area…tons of single track trails.

Newark area…White Clay Creek / Middle Run / Judge Morris…yes they’re all connected

…another daily use fee.

Feel free to e-mail me directly if you have any ?'s

Awesome! Thank you very much!

Thank you, I will check that out.

The Greenway runs though Belleview…track is nice…bathrooms and water at the track…also a Gatorade machine…but it only takes quarters!

Scenery is better on warm sunny days!!!

hey there
there is a lot of good running in the area.
Wilmington has good city-park running. the Brandywine Creek (downtown) is great. Bellevue park (north of town) is also good.
Newark is about 15-20 minutes south. it has so-so road running, mostly west of town, and great trail running. White Clay Creek can be accessed from many sides and all are good.

feel free to PM or email me if you’re looking for some one to run with or some specific directions.

x2 on Brandywine State Park. I travel to Wilmington a few times a year for work and usually run there, some nice trails.

I went to the University of Delaware and I always look back and miss the days I used to run on white clay creek.

x2 on all of that… Brandywine Creek State Park / Woodlawn is the place to go if you want the most hills for your trail dollars, so to speak.

Also, if you’ll have a bike with you, the riding pretty much anywhere north to north-west of Newark, 10-15 minutes west of Wilmington, is fantastic: quiet, well-paved, hilly roads with very little traffic and very courteous drivers. I spent a bit of time over the past two years in Newark and I couldn’t get over how good the riding was. Basically, pick any road and go - you’ll have a great ride.

I live in Newark, DE and know good road and trail options. White Clay Creek State Park has many miles of trails - and Fair Hill (just over the DE/MD border) is awesome. Most are single track - but it’s not hard to put together a long double track trail run at Fair Hill (less than 15 min from downtown Newark). Creek Rd starts in Newark as pavement, but 1.5 - 2 miles (depending on if you take the new bridge) down - it turns into hard packed dirt. Flat, fast running back there. Can cross the street and work your way to the Pennsylvania border and beyond. Depending on your pace and schedule - I’d be happy to have you join our group for a run or two.

Rachel,
Thank you for the invite. I’ll definitely check out the trails and if I can meet up with you guys and not slow you down that might be fun. I’m normally a 6:30-7:00/mile pace person, depending on how technical/steep/long we’re talking. If that’s not outside what your group likes to run maybe I can meet up with you all.

Thanks,
Andrew

You will love the last half mile.

Oh, my group would be waaayyyy too slow for you… I don’t think I could do 6:30’s if being chased. Happy to tell you my favorite routes, but I don’t have a chance of staying with you…

just a bit of advise especially if you hit White Clay. Gets kind of crowded (so to speak) with bikers and runners on the weekends so DONOT wear head phones. If you do, you may be wearing a bike where the sun don’t shine - be careful!

There are lots of good places to run in that area. Clay Creek is great, but easy to get run over on nice Sat/Sun mornings (+1 on no iPod). Another nice run is along the canal (south of Newark on 896), Lums Pond hosts a couple of Triathlons so you could run those courses as well. Have fun, and hope you get some descent weather.
