I will be in Islamorada for 4 days in the next few weeks (That’s about halfway down the Keys between Miami and Key West). I was wondering about running. Is running on US1 allowed? Is it advisable? Otherwise, I don’t see how I am going to get my running miles in.
Thankfully, there is a super nice 50 meter pool nearby.

There is a bike path (Florida Overseas Heritage Trail) that runs the length of the keys. Some sections are better than others, but you should easily be able to run.
There is a sidewalk / multi-use path pretty much all the way from Miami to Key West. So you can definitely run. The bridges can be a little nerve wracking. Never take an intersection for granted. We’re sort of famous for our terrible drivers so use caution and never ever assume that a Florida driver sees you even if you’re dressed like a glow-in-the-dark highlighter on a sunny day, is sober because it’s 7 am, or has any idea what the laws of driving (or common sense) might actually be.
In other news, I suggest Morada Bay for a sunset dinner. They have a pretty beach there that faces west. And if you’re up for an open water swim - that’s a beautiful place for it, or Founders Pool is also there.
I will be down there for a photo shoot thingy that my 13 year old daughter is in. We are staying at the Moorings, which looks pretty nice. How does an open water swim there (ocean side) compare to Morada Bay?
I frequent the keys quite a bit; usually marathon but was in Key West last weekend - used to stay in Islamorada quite a bit. In Isla, there is a sort of offset road off the main road - almost like a very over sized roadway/sidewalk that runs through that entire key. You can run on that. There is also sidewalks. Islamorada is fairly slow paced - speed limit is 35mph I believe.
You will be able to find areas probably right outside where you are staying.
Pretty great actually. The moorings is the start location of an event called the Alligator Lighthouse swim. www.swimalligatorlight.com I think that “Lighthouse Larry” might swim there pretty regularly. I don’t know him personally but he seems like a good guy. If you make it out to the lighthouse it’s like being on a reef in that you might see turtles and lots of tropical fish but that’s 4 miles and change from shore. The keys are home to some great snorkeling and diving if you’re inclined toward that kind of thing. I hope you get great weather.

Unless i have my ST Davids mixed up, David in NY is a former Oly Trials swimmer and IIRC, went somewhere around 1:50 for 200 lcm, missing the Oly team in the 800 free relay by just 1 or 2 sec i think. So, even if he’s not quite in his former Trials shape, he could prob swim the 8 miles in his sleep, espec if he wears a wettie. He has only mentioned his OT background once or twice AFAIK, as he seems to be pretty modest:)
