What does everyone wear for cold weather running? By cold weather, I am generally dealing with 0 - 20F with wind chill potentially slightly below 0F. In the past, I have sort of just toughed it out and kept my winter runs to an hour or so. However, this winter, I am hoping to increase my mileage a bit throughout the winter. I am generally comfortable waist up, it is lower region that gets coldest; usually from the wind. I am looking for ways to keep myself (and more importantly my boys) warm. Thoughts?
When it gets really cold and windy, I wear compression shorts, tights and gore-tex running pants. I also add another layer to protect the private parts by using a sock or wash cloth tucked in front. Three layers usually more than enough
Nordic skiing gear to the rescue!
Look into either wind-stopper boxers, or wind stopper Cross country ski pants.
I have many pieces of the Mizuno Breathe collection and I use Sugoi Mid-Zero tights for running and biking. I have been pleased with these items. You may opt for the heavier version of the the Sugoi tights, though. Your temps are a little colder than what I encounter. Sorry, I’m not sure of the name of the heavier stuff.
Recently bought a pair of Pearl Izumi AmFibs… seem to keep my lower half quite comfortable.
Craft base layer. Look for goretex windstopper panels.

+1 Found these for $58 during Black Friday and they are incredible.
Wish I could find something comparable for the upper body.

Get an airline ticket to Texas and wear it on the palm of your right hand to your local airport.
Try this.

Mysterioso will keep you super warm, maybe too warm. I have fished in zero degree weather in waders all day in the mountains and literally did not get cold. Very thin, light, flexible and even helps with wind. I live in TX so I haven’t had the need to run, but I often thought this would be the best base layer for super cold + sports. Socks, pants, and long sleeve shirt with neck protection.

Another Pearl Izumi Amphib lover here–amazing for super cold temps with wind! I ran in single digit temps with 15-20 mph winds and was not cold on lower half (or upper half for that matter).
Ha! Except for Dallas right? From what I have heard, it is basically shut down because of the ice…
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have lots to add to my Christmas list now.
What are you talking about, it was 27 Saturday morning. I thought we left that crap in Ohio.
I just wear my usually run shoes and socks, run tights (preferably one thickness up from usual) and three layers. Icebreaker (wool - 160 thickness) base layer t-shirt . Long sleeved Helly Hansen Warm or Icebreaker 200 mid layer. Solomon XC ski jacket. Icebreaker beanie.
I have a love hate relationship with Icebreaker. The fit is terrible for athletes I find, unless you are a big one. They don’t do a lot of slim fit. But their wool is excellent at keeping your temperature regulated. I would like to find an alternative, Smartwool seem a bit better but I have not purchased one of their items yet.
I found that on a good run the main in issues were face and hands. Your body creates it’s own heat, in fact I am often too warm. I need some form of shell layer or kits for my hands and Marks work warehouse offered up a nice cheap hinged balaclava by Dakota which keeps the neck, head, face or any combination of the above warm.
Pearl Izumi Amphib is what I use for x-c skiing in those kinds of temperatures… works great. They are pricey but worth it.
I just wear tri shorts under my run tights. I have some older pairs that were getting a bit see-through so I generally use those.
I agree with the XC skiing gear.
I also have a pair of Brooks Utopia Thermal pants that are awesome. Ran 5 miles in -9 deg F on saturday wearing them with just a thin pair of patagonia long underwear underneath. My legs (or my boys) were never cold.
usually run tights under something that will block the wind. Layers on top (I like Hot Chilly’s stuff seems to be pretty warm) something high on the neck, hat or face mask maybe even both, and when it’s below 20 a little vaseline on the face really helps
OK guys - don’t laugh - here is a quick, cheap solution to keeping the lower half warm from the ladies.
Go to the grocery store, buy a pair of XL Legg’s tights - the really thick, opaque ones.
You can probably find your size in the bargain bin!
They won’t cut the wind, but they add a nice thin, insulating, flexible layer under your tights on those really cold days.
No chafing and they do wick sweat away.
Smart wool fit is good - have the 250 mid layer and it fits like a base layer should. Have you looked at either I/O merino or Ibex as an alternative? The IO light weight has a nice fit, warm but breaths and also has thumb holes - which I like. The ibex is also a little more athletic cut in base layers and have more variety. The cycling jerseys are baggy, but the shirts like the Shak and Shak light fit atheltic but not snug.
In this kind of weather (0-20) I’ll wear swiftwick pursuit socks, a heavier pair of PI tights ive had for years, my midweight wool base layer, wool vest and then heavy wind breaker. Wool gloves and manzella overgloves that come off when I warm up. Wool or craft hat and neck gaiter if really cold.
