What are the best shoes to use for winter running. There’s always some degree of snow/ice/slop on the ground here and traction is never great. Having a bad knee I’d like to wear shoes that will help avoid slipping and sliding.
I use Yaktrax - they go over your regular running shoes and work great in snow.
Well, screw shoes are a pretty easy and cheap solution. Shouldn’t do any real damage to a pair of shoes, though you might want to try this out on an older pair of shoes that still has some life left in them.
I use Yak Traxs as well. If it is nasty I wear gators too. I’ve been wearing them a lot lately
Wear wool socks because even if your feet get wet they’ll still stay warm.
Do you wear the Yaktrax for traction or as protection from the snow and slush? My main concern is hitting a slippery spot with an unstable knee.
Traction. It works on slush as well. I haven’t slipped in them yet. You are modifying your stride a bit so the foot lead foot isn’t hitting the ground at an angle that will let is slide out if you are a heel striker and pushing off the back foot is done with care but I haven’t had any problems. Once you get used to the road conditions you will feel better about your stride.
I also wear trail runners with them for the extra grip. Regular road shoes have little traction. Just be careful and you’ll be fine. Don’t do speed work
Thanks. I will have to give them a try.
I’ll 2nd (or 3rd) the Yaktrax. Plenty of traction with them, even on ice, but most importantly you don’t skate around when you hit the dry pavement. They are pretty durable (get the pro model with the dorsal strap), but I do manage to kill a pair about once per season on some nasty off road winter trail race.
Another thumbs-up for the YakTrax Pro’s. The strap over the top of your foot keeps them snug and I wear them with trail shoes (I wear Inov-8 310’s) since the sole is a little more lugged. They are easy on/off and light, so you can just tuck them in your waist if need be. Ray
Yaktrax Pro. They are absolutely awesome. I cannot say enough about them. Strap them on your regular running shoes and you are set.
I second the screw shoes. The first day of the 100/100 challenge I was met with a big snow here in denver with my entire route packed with snow. I was nervous about the traction, so I went with the shoe screw method. I think the box of screw cost like $1.35 at Lowes. I put them in my old worn out running shoes, and will keep them ready for the next snow.

That was my question about them. It appears that the springs would wear out pretty easily. Not so, I guess?
I’m about to try the screws on my shoes for a trip to Mammoth.
I’ve had mine for 2 seasons and no problems. I don’t wear them alot since I live in the Northwest and we don’t get a lot of snow.
I might have to go in for a pair. they sure are simple and they can be removed before they scratch the floor.
Be sure and remove them before you hit any tile floor. I almost broke my ass coming into the house one day. My dog broke my fall. He was OK, I was embarassed.
Thanks! the place we’re staying in Mammoth has tile by the door.
Note to self, take the damned things off before stepping inside.

For this reason, I have elastic laces on my screw shoes even though I’ve only got regular laces on my good trainers.
I use UK Gear winter run shoes…fantastic for keeping out the wet and cold.
I got a chance to try my Due North All Purpose Traction Aids, basically slip on shoe covers with carbide studs in the bottom. They work great for runs where the walks aren’t all snow covered and are icy or have hidden ice under a lite snow cover, and I don’t notice them like I do the Yaks when on a hard surface. For snowier sloppy conditions the Yaks are nice.
