Hello STers,
I’ve got a business trip to Nashville coming up. Hoping on doing some running while there. (no real need to bike or swim). Staying near Vanderbilt.
Looking for any advice on places to run. Won’t have a car. Willing to travel some once or twice to start/end a run via taxi/public transportation, but really do prefer running out of the hotel.
I’ll have crazy jet lag, coming from Asia, so also curious what times are/are not safe for running.
I’d avoid typical rush hour just for the sake of all the stopping at imtersectiosn.
From Vandy, the town is yours. You can run downtown and hop across the river and pick up a greenway. You can run around Vandy and swing into Centennial Park. You can run through sylvan park and the McCabe golf course on a greenway. Or if you are adventurous, head to Percy Warner Park (at the end of Belle Meade Blvd). There you have miles of hills and trails if you want them.
All this is VERY accessible from your hotel. Percy Warner is a few miles from Vandy. I can’t remember if the trolley goes out there.
I live 3 km from Vanderbilt. How far do you want to run and do you prefer ‘sightseeing’ or neighborhoods, or parks…? As a previous poster said - you have quite a bit of choice from that location. Traffic is heavy in that area starting at 16.30-16.45 for about 60-90 min. If you have the misfortune of being out about then on the day of a home Vanderbilt basketball game - ugh. Still, if you are on foot (no in a car/bus), there are easy ways to get away from the mess in a km or so, not a huge issue - but something to be aware of as many popular routes will aling with the traffic flow and you’ll see nothing but cars and breathe nothing but exhaust!
Thanks to both of you. I’ll probably be doing a few 6-8 milers and one long run (maybe 12-15 miles if I’m up for it?)
curious too if there are hours of the night when it wouldn’t be safe to run due to, i dunno, random violence or whatnot. ok to run at 11pm? 2am?
Run towards Belle Meade, not towards downtown, if you are running late at night. In general, it gets sketchier toward downtown and less sketchy towards Belle Meade/Percy Warner. There are tons of cops in Belle Meade, too…the place is like a giant speed trap.
One Nashville run in the books! Got the long run in first -runnign from the hotel to Percy Warner and back. Nice park, though I wish I’d gotten to do more of it. The run was around 10K to the park, so another 10K back; only had it in me to run around 5K in the park itself. If I have time I might run there again on Saturday, though I’d probably take a cab to the park to start, so that more of my run could be in the park itself.
I was in Nashville near Vandy not too long ago. Went for a long run, checked out Vandy’s football stadium, ran around campus, then out into the neighborhoods, got lost, started to rain, homeless-ish guys showed me the way back, asked for money, but had nothing on me as I was out for a run. Kind of a fun adventure. Vandy is cool. Nashville is cool. Also, there is a fantastic swimming facility near campus. 50m pool with stadium seating. I think it’s were Vandy practices, but it’s not on campus. I think it was like $7 to swim.
looks nice - and thanks for the link - but i’m not sure i’ll have a 2nd long run in me on this short trip. 11.2 plus 6 for the run back… though kinda wishing i’d done that today.
