I will be in Bal Harbour during the first week in January, near the beach. I am not a huge fan of runs on the beach. Are there any trails or bike paths or decent, low-traffic running routes in the area?
Thanks, David

I used to live in South Beach. I have to say, the best place to run is either on the beach or the boardwalk. If you go a bit farther south, say south of the Fontainbleu, there is a hard packed part of the beach where the life guards/police, etc drive and it is easy to run in shoes there and the beach is very wide and flat.
That hard sand is from when the Corps of Engineers did the beach replenishment back in the late 70’s when they pumped up huge quantities of sediment from 100’s of yards off shore and basically remade the length of Miami Beach. The sand wasn’t so nice for a beach, but where it is still there, and exposed, it is easy to run on.
Not really, just run up or down on A1A. Sidewalks are pretty decent but lots of buildings therefore driveways… Your best bet for steady non-stop is probably the causeways.

You can run north over the bridge and through the park. Go another few miles and you will get to a golf course community (cant get that name right now) where you can run around it then back.

Depending on how far you want to run, The Oleta park is on 163rd street and is very big.

If I remember correctly (and if its still there and same name) Aventura?
yes, aventura is further up around 190 something street and beyond… There are a million gazillion golfcourses… i will say pick one and do laps.

If you head south, entering through 96th St towards the beach, there is a trail of packed dirt (very solid) that is nice to run, but does not go for too long - maybe only 1 mile.
If you head north on A1A, you can go through the park after the bridge and then you’ll have to can on the sidewalk (not very nice) until Hollywood (7 miles). Then from Hollywood there is a paved boardwalk by the beach that is nice too (about 2 miles long).
Another option is to take the car and park on the Aventura Mall and run the loop around the golf course (2.9 miles each lap) - good thing about it is that it has water fountains!
PM me if you need more info.
Looking at a map and factoring in some advice here, sounds like running north over the bridge then cutting west on 163rd to Oleta Park to some trail running and back… that looks and sounds pretty good. Right?
I suggest taking a drive down to South Beach and meet at the Life Guard Stand at 6th Street at 5:00 pm everyday for a run with the Raven (He has run more then 10,000 days consecutive) on the hard packed sand of South Beach, amazing views and you get to run with a local legend…check out his site… he also swims after the run…never missed a day in like 20 years
