I will be visiting Lisbon next week for and need to find places to run wednesday through saturday. I am staying at the Sana hotel at Praca Marques de Pombal. I looked on the map and saw the Parque Florestal de Monsanto is nearbye: is that a good place to run? Or is there somewhere else where I could do up to 90min without doing too many loops and without people staring? Plus, I am looking for a 400m track for either thr or fri, is there a track in Lisbon that is open to the public?
Praca Marques de Pombal is smack in the center of Lisbon, so it’s hard to run from there, I should know, I lived in the same block as the hotel you’re staying in for more than 20 years
Right by Marques de Pombal there’s a park that is a bit too hilly and too small to run in. The better places to run closer to you are Estadio Universitario, which about 5k north of you, and like you mention, Monsanto, which is 4-5k West.
Estadio Universitario is a park with a lot of sports facilities and with a variety of trails so it doesn’t get too boring. I’ve done 2:30h runs in there It’s well lit, so you can run there at night. You can also take a shower there. There’s a subway line from Marques de Pombal to Estadio Universitario, a 15-20min trip.
Monsanto is much better to run, with lots of trails and roads. The down side is that it’s hard to run from your hotel there because it’s surrounded by main roads. Also it is not a good place to run after dark, not very well lit and can be dangerous.
Other possibilities is to run to the river and then run along it. It’s very cool to run along the river and through the harbour, one of my favorite places to run, either going west towards the sea or east/north towards inland.
If you want more details, just send me a PM or contact Sedi directly, he’s actually in Lisbon now
My advice is run in Belém, near the Tagus River… it is so nice, and you can go there at any time, there are lots of people trainning there. (there are also nice monuments for you to visit… after shower…)
Or you can try Monsanto during the day, until 8pm.
Another place is Parque das Nações, also near by the river.
If you go to Belém, maybe we will stumble in each other…
I’ll be run and ride in Lisbon during the all week, most likely in Monsanto. Let me know when are you planning to run and maybe we can arrange for some training together.
As for the track there are a couple that I believe can be used. Just let me know the details when you need it and I’ll help you with it.
That’s not it… as many here will attest, I have a contract with the Portuguese Board of Tourism, I have to do this kind of stuff Sedi is taking over my place for the time being, and he’s doing great, check out his response
Thank you for the advice on Belem and Parque das Nacoes! I assume I will have to take the subway to get there, so maybe I can scout those places out as a tourist first so I dont get too lost
As you’re a girl, you’d know best: what do women wear to run? Am I ok in running shorts and a tank top or should I cover-up more?
I have 2 recovery runs planned for wednesday and friday, and a 15k track tempo run at 4.40-4.30pace (I am training for an october marathon) on Thursday. Saturday is a 2.30hr run, if I can find a real good place to run it, or I can switch that to Sunday when I get back home if I dont feel comfortable trying to run long in lisbon.
I would love it if you can help me find a place to do the Thursday 15k, as that is the only ‘hard’ run in terms of logistics. A track or Holmer would be perfect!

If you want to go to Parque das Nações, you just need to take the subway (from Praça do Marquês). To Belém you’ll need the subway and the tram (?) number 15, wich you can take in Cais do Sodré.
I usually run in Belém and Monsanto, wearing only shorts and a top or a t-shirt.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. I had a wonderful time in Lisbon, and got my workouts in (especially thankful for the hints on Estadio Universital- got to run on my own private track Thanks again! Obrigado Ziva
