Running in a costume along side a bike race

I used to think it was ridiculous. Then I found it humorous. Now I want to do it. I was looking USA Pro Challenge on TV and there are a lot of people in capes and other running along side of the riders. Anyone have any thoughts on what to wear?

Good running shoes and a smile, only!

Regardless of what you wear (and I’m sure you know this already), be real careful to not get in the path of the bikes, cross in front of them, get too close, etc, etc. I don’t mind the people running alongside the racers, just as long as they’re not putting themselves in a position to potentially effect the race. It really, really pisses me off when you see riders hvae to swerve around these idiots getting to close or cutting in front of bikes.

All that said, for some reason I want to see a Spongebob costume flying up the mountain with the riders. Very strange…maybe my niece’s tv viewing is starting to rub off on me.

I think it is a toss up between the large antlers on the football helmet and the “fat lady” in the bikini
.

Angel of Death mask/make-up and your birthday suit to juxtapose the start and end of life. And comfy shoes.

Have you learned nothing from the Incredibles? NO CAPES. I’m waiting for one to get stuck in a derailleur.

You were right the first time. Don’t be that guy.

Helmet with huge antlers and a tight speedo. Barefoot running sandals. “Jesus” scrawled on your chest, “Saves” on the back.

Light’n up Francis! isn’t it great to see people state side so AMP’d to see a bike race…even if they are loud, drunk and dumb.

don’t be that guy…the wet blanket!

Can’t wait to see that chicken running on Swan Mt road today!

This sums it up for me. I hope this helps to narrow it down.

Borat suit!

I would love to do the Borat swim suit! that would be awesome!

However, I have a pair of Superman underwear my wife gave me as a “stuffing” stocker for Xmas. I’m thinking just that, with some good running shoes, is all I need. I dig the guys that wear he full on costume but I keep thinking it would be really hard to drink a six pack of beer wearing all that gear.

I second the Borat. I can still hear Phil Liggett in his british accent “Oh my!” LOL…priceless

The more outrageous the better, totally cool thing to do. The more deranged you act the better too

No way I would this in my local crit because a lot of people would know who I am. But next time I’m at a big bike race I am all over it. Superman underwear, goggles, and good running shoes - maybe an American flag.

While we all love the devil…the original LUK one. I now find that it seems to be a bunch of ass hats trying to find a bigger hat and less about the race and the racers. I went to the Tour in '03, ran along side some riders, I even assisted the Lantern Rouge (he asked to be pushed). Memory of a lifetime, but I can tell you I was focused on the riders and the race(and not drunk), not a TV camera. Pro cycling, the only arena where you can get that close to the athletes, but not if this trajectory continues. I want to go to the Giro in two years, so ass hats (not saying your one), don’t make them put barriers up for the last 5 k and anything over 12%.

Any one of us who has been knows that the race passes by so quickly that even when you are focused on the race and racers it only lasts a few seconds. They fly by. The entire race is about the event - the entire procession of cars that preceeds the racers, the crowd, the carnival atmosphere.

The only time I get to see the racers is either at the start or the finish. If I’m anywhere on the course, the entire thing flashes past in a split second, so really it becomes more about just being there. I can understand why people dress up and have fun.

I thought is was stupid as well. But then I camped out on Independence Pass on Tuesday night and really got into the spirit of the race. At the last minute I decided to run with a couple of the racers with a flag around my neck like a cape. When they pan down to the switch back below, I’m the douche with the Ethiopian flag. It was so much fun. When Andy went by, he was a minute or so back, I ran with him for about 200yds. I felt like I was in France…
