Running Ankle Weights

Anyone train with ankle weights for running? I am looking to invest in a pair to try them out. If anyone has suggestions on a set that allows modifying the internal weight up to 5 lbs (not sure what maximum limit should be), please advise.

I have looked into these:

We’ve all done it…don’t! :0)

What are you looking to gain out of these?

If you’re looking for a harder workout, why not just run faster, or up hills?

Ha… Is this a rookie mistake? I trained all of last year for my HIM without them and figured that I should add a new option to my training. Going to do marathon training also this year…

My thought was that if you train with extra weight on your legs and can pace at your desired time, then during the race your legs will feel lighter and keeping pace should be easier… all theoretical for me.

Not generally considered a good idea. A weight vest is a safer alternative, but I’m not sure that is even worth the risk.

Appreciate all the quick feed and article link. Very informative!

I will save myself the $40.00 (can spend it on other fun triathlon stuff - I do need to get a fan for my indoor trainer) and skip the weights. I already do hill running and speed intervals to get faster and more comfortable for longer runs so will just continue to do what I do… always like to try new training techniques and that is why I love getting recommendations and opinions from the ST family first.

Thanks!

There are many ways to load up the body, a vest, run hills and so on. Adding weight to your feet, especially those things you wrap around your ankles, just slams your feet and ankles into the ground, changes you gait, chafes you when you move (and they move). There’s probably more reasons “not to” than I can think of to “to do”. But like I said, we’ve all tried. Go to any garage sale, there’ll be a pair there for sale, cheap.

Sounds like an injury waiting to happen.

That’s what speedwork & hills are for. Go faster than your race pace some of the time, so that race pace becomes easier.

+1. I came to running through boxing, initially. The added weight on the ankles just ends up pounding the soles of your feet. Short trail runs I’d use them. Not worth the payoff (there was a payoff, but nothing some weight work in the gym couldn’t top.) Vest is a better way to go to add muscle/“torque to the motor” but even that, for triathlon, seems like a waste.
I started running with weighted gloves as well. I wonder if anyone still does this in the boxing (or trail/tri) world. Keep you hands up, at least rib cage level, almost in a defensive stance while you run (with weights). Really helped my arm swing when I first started. In the ring I never dropped my guard, so it was a great muscle memory drill atleast! Now I do long distance trail runs and the hand held water bottles never bothered me… so I got that goin for me… which is good…
Anyway, good luck!

Why can’t you be normal and just get fat like the rest of us?
