Running and Riding in Big Bear

The family is heading up to Big Bear for a little R&R, and I was looking for some good cycling routes and running trails. Ideas? Are there specific trail heads I should run from? Roads I should avoid?

Thanks,

JohnA

I have mountain biked the Big Pine Flat trail on the North side of the lake. That was nice, it’s a little quieter over there. Snow Summit is also good for mountain biking and hiking. Don’t know any specific road routes as I have only mt biked there. Of course you could always ride up.

bump…

Mountain biking or road riding? I went one year to do the NORBA at Big Bear and the day after I did a complete loop off road on some trail called around the world which ended up being about fifty miles. A mix of extreme technical and fireroads. The fireroads have some very long climbs. Check out mtbr.com and post in the socal forum. More likely to find a local there. The ski resort may be open to mountain biking in the off season.

Actually looking for both on and off road riding, and trail running - of course. We are staying in some place off Starvation Flats or something - not sure how far from the lake.

I am guessing there is some road or path around the lake, but would be nice to find a few climbs with a decent shoulder on the road.

The ride over Onyx Summit is good… you feel that 8,400 feet. Keep going down to Riverside and then come back up and over.

Joe, I’ll be up at Arrowhead from about 3pm on Friday to Sunday afternoon. Lets put a ride together.

Are you going with your family on the rides? This was three years ago but on the drive up I saw a mountain lion and wolves so take appropriate cautionary measures. One of the roads I remember being an epic from mountain top to desert floor. Don’t remember more names, sorry, but it’s was definitely a blast. For road rides checkout the local forums on roadbikereview.com.

No, family will be back at the condo, this is just me - and perhaps my walther - I hate big, man-eating cats…
