What are everyone’s thoughts on running a few hours after doing a lower body workout in the gym? (e.g. Lifted legs this morning at 6:30am and I’m considering an easy 45 minute jog on my lunch break around noon)
Phrased differently, how does everyone fit their gym workouts into their Swim/Bike/Run schedule?
During marathon training I usually lift after recovery runs. I focus on quads, and specifically the VMO (bottom inner muscle of the quad) with leg extensions. I don’t find the benefit in becoming faster, but I think it has helped me maintain a higher weekly mileage (60-70) without injury. Previously I’d had problems with ITB and runner’s knee.
I think running on tired legs is a real benefit. Nothing too hard. But the G’s idea muscular endurance is the key to success for most ag’ers worked well for me.
When you are lifting you are tearning the muscles, letting them heal and making them stronger.
When you are running you are tearing muscles too but that’s not it. You are developing your technique and endurance for running.
Do you want to do both on the same day? Maybe if you are doing a recovery or maintence run or even some strength training to balance muscles. I would think that one would conflict with the other if they were both ME or MS workouts.
I rarely do any strength training since I am 5’4" and 150lbs and have a lot of muscle mass from playing hockey. The only time that I do it is if I feel that one of an opposing pair of muscles is stronger than the other. (hamstrings, quads)
I am not an expert on this so take it with a grain of salt.
