Running ache. Precursor to injury?

This winter I made a pledge to myself to improve my running. I’ve been trying to correct gait and mechanical problems (extreme heel strike and overstriding) and emphasizing frequency of runs over length of individual runs.

I haven’t really jacked up the weekly average mileage that much, but over the last month I’ve noticed that one of my shins (proximal to the ankle) is always a little tender at the start of every run. The pain usually goes away (or seems to any way. Maybe everything else just starts hurting more) after awhile.

I’ve never really had a running injury before. To be honest I’m not entirely sure I’ve ever run enough to really get injured.

Should this ache concern me?

If it increases in intensity and duration with your run, or it starts to hurt even when you’re not running, that’s a sure sign it’s headed for injury. Do you try icing it after your runs?
