Run/swim in Long Beach, CA

Hey guys,

Going to Long Beach, CA for 5 days in 2 weeks. Will be staying by the Long Beach Convention Center. Will have a car and can use it for before work morning runs or swims.

Any place to run or swim you would recommend? Any running trails?

Thank you for your help!

There is a bike path that goes right past the convention center out to the Queen Mary. You can get as many miles as you want.
There is a pool close by in Belmont Shores or for open water go to Naples Island.

Specifcally, at the intersection of Bayshore and 2d (on one end, or Bayshore and Ocean on the other), there is a buoyed OW swim area. If you follow the buoys from the bridge to the wooden pier, it’s a .5 mile roundtrip. You can go further past the wooden pier, but there may be some boat traffic in the area depending on time of day
See the map in the swim course section of this link

As above, for run the path is fine but concrete. If you want trails, closest I know of would be about 1/2 north in Palos Verdes

Thanks guys.

As far as the swim goes, do I have to take my wetsuit with me, hows the water? Any sharks?

Thanks guys.

Don’t worry about sharks. It is a protected bay. No surf and no sharks, but bring your wetsuit. The water in So Cal is pretty cool year round.

Chris,

Is Abalone Cove Shoreline Park the most convenient one? https://www.google.com/maps/@33.7434861,-118.3805898,86m/data=!3m1!1e3

Will try my best to get out there. Don’t get many trails with an ocean view out here in Schaumburg, IL.

Thank you for your help!

Long Beach has a great mutilsport community and the local club Tribe probably has shceduled workouts you might be able to join. I lived there for years and other than swimming, you won’t need a car to bike or run.

For swimming as another poster wrote, go to 95 Bay Shore Ave, Long Beach, CA 90803. Right across the street is the bay with protected swim buoys. Depending on how far you want to swim, you can make the effort as along as 2.4 miles with an out-and-back along the shoreline. It’s such an awesome place to work on OWS.

Running, again, as another mentioned, there’s a path that you’ll find right along the shoreline. If you head south, you can run about 5 miles one way and then turn around and head back toward downtown.

Cycling, if you’ve got the time there’s a path system that allows you to ride about 56 miles while encountering only about three traffic lights. If you’re going to ride, pm me and I can send you the route. I rode thousands of miles on those paths while I lived there and I actually miss them, despite the fact they’re pretty ugly to ride along.

FYI, everything that I mentioned is pan flat, even the water! There’s no wakes to speak of and no hills either.

Again, if you want details just pm me and I can send you tons of information.

Enjoy your stay, it was a great place to be a triathlete, that’s for sure!

Thank you for the detailed information.

Moving to the west coast has been a dream of mine, hopefully that will happen in the next few years.

No, the ones along the coast are pretty short and not tied together, The ones on the other side of PV drive all go straight up : ) I’ll pm you a route or two that’s hopefully easy to follow, since a lot of the PV trails require a bunch of turns etc.

Thanks a lot Chris!

OK, check out the link. Yo can string together a coastal run. Here’s 12 miles of trails (some road access) you could run any of this and it’s world class views. Mostly rolling, a couple hills but nothing huge. Anything in the interior of palos verdes requires more explanation /local knowledge than i know how to convey, so best bet is just stay along the coast

Awesome, thanks Chris!

The Naples Island swim is calm, cold and dirty. Do nit be surprised if you come out with an oil mustache. If you want a choppy open water swim, head down to Seal Beach which is a few miles from the convention center. As one mentioned before, Belmont Pool is open for lap swimming. Check out the schedule for the distances being offered at various times of the day. The pool is new, very white and open so wear tinted goggles should you swim there.

Long Beach is home to TRIBE and also a group called California Triathlon (calendar here: http://www.californiatriathlon.org/calendar.html). For California Triathlon most workouts are free, but you must RSVP for the Ocean Swim Series. (Hermosa, which is close to Long Beach).

There are some great running trails already mentioned and bayshore park is a great protected swim cove.

If you’re thinking of driving to swim Corona del Mar in Newport Beach is nice. I’ve swam in all the places posted and IMHO CDM is the best in the area. Very popular with OC tri peeps.

If you’re thinking of this PM me and I’ll give you details.
