Run shoe w/ a heel that takes pressure off achilles? Nike Frees maybe?

I have insertional tendonitis possibly w bursitis (and I’m miserable); a doctor yesterday - foot and ankle surgeon who specializes in runners - suggested cutting part of the heel out of my shoe. I can do that, but is there a company that makes shoes that have less pressure in the heel? Achilles issues seem common enough that this should be a thing. The Nike Free looks like it’s basically a sock back there? Can anyone comment?

The pain I’m having is more on the medial side of the tendon/foot than down the back of the heel.

I’ve got a PT too but HMU with other tips… I’m over here trying to avoid a psych ward from misery (not entirely a joke). This started in early June and I’ve been really good to it. (Started working with the PT two weeks ago and have high hopes for that. In the moments when I am able to be hopeful).

Thank you for any help. Much love.

Been there, been there, been there!!!

The shoe that worked best for me was Adidas Ultraboost, because the heel is ‘cut out’ and is basically just material. No rubbing at all. I wished I’d had shoes like them 20 years ago.

googling… the pain I’m having is more on the medial edge of the tendon and foot than on the heel, those definitely look nice and loose back down by the heel but looks like there might be some pressure medially and that’s what I’m trying to eliminate. What do you think? The sock-like part on those just seems straight down the back of the heel?

now tell me how you got your AT to go away  please please I am begging. I’ll trade you my best swim sets for this knowledge.

I’ve got no advice on shoes. I do have other advice.

On sept 13 I am having surgery to fix my insertional Achilles issue. It started 5 years ago with symptoms you describe. I love to run and am competitive and of course wanted to be back running asap. This was a mistake. I should have stopped running, addressed the issue fully, and not run until nothing was painful.

What happened was I constantly rushed back as I blew thru all the conservative options out there. My achilles now has calcification at the insertion and there’s also a heel spur that has cracked.

So I’ll be having a debridement, repair of the achilles and removal of the spur. If I recover well I can begin a conservative walk/jog sometime in the feb-april timeframe and a full recovery in about a year.

The upshot is my surgeon did Galen Rupps so I know he’s good.

But please, be conservative

+1 on the ultraboosts (look at the ultraboost 20 or a similar in the dna line….they have a very minimal heel counter). The shoes also have a high-ish drop which should also help).

I appreciate your sharing and advice. This is the sort of thing I’m terrified of.

I’ve come around to the notion that you can’t mess with the achilles. If it hurts, trying to accommodate the symptom with shoes or other things might be ok. But it seems risky for how bad the worst case is.

I hope yours heals up well and fast.

First, sorry you’re so miserable :frowning: sucks doesn’t begin to cover it.

I think I understand what you’re asking for in the heel area, but I may be wrong. Sorry in advance if I misunderstood. But, I have a pair of Topo Cyclone that have a minimal heel fabric. Looking at the Topo website, I only see the ST-4 shown with a similar heel now. :frowning: Maybe one of those would work for you?

you didn’t misunderstand, that is more along the lines of what I’m looking for

thank you for the reply

this is very much in my mind lately. And thanks for the well wishes

It’s hard to know what to do because I’ve had one doctor (in Maine before I flew back to Oklahoma for the academic year) tell me not to run if it hurts, and an MD here - and the PT - saying run a little bit. (And the PT is a very fast triathlete and very knowledgeable). And I’ve heard lots of horror stories.

Comments like yours carry a lot of weight and I’m leaning toward super super super conservative - I thought I already had been; I’ve run so minimally since early June (like a total of 5 miles, in five runs, four of them run/walk, in August).

As a data point…
On line with post 7 above.
The best thing to “fix” my combo of mild AT & PF that had frustrated me seemingly forever (a whole summer!) was my broken collarbone that stopped me from the cycle of wait a few days and “wow, I really feel fine this time. I’ll just do a quick jog. I’m sure it’ll be ok.”

That block of recovery 'cause I couldn’t possibly run was the best “magic.” So, much that the next winter I was able to put in a nice run block that allowed me to get the fastest SBR splits in my AG at Wildflower (RIP). Sorry for the backdoor…

Time wounds all heels. But, it also…
Time heals all wounds.

Fingers crossed fer ya

Sorry for the backdoor…

apology not needed, that’s awesome.
Thank you for the reply. As I think I said to someone else, I really appreciate the experiences more than I can say.

Several current models of Adidas have the heel counter split in 2 with a soft, flexible material in between.

There are some Saucony’s that have a heel that angles away from the body which may feel good. the kinvara pro is one such shoe.

You may have to mosey down to the local running shop and try a few shoes on.

I would start with the highest drop that’s also comfy to you. Chat with PT about adjustable heel lift to unload the Achilles…I use these short term with my runners with Achilles tendinopathy. If your job allows, walk around in these shoe as well. Recovery is tedious but can be successful if you follow the progressive loading program. There isn’t a quick, magical fix for these. Insertional type can be a bit slower to recover vs midsubstance/proximal type.

Good luck.

thank you for the reply.

Thanks, DD. I hope you’re well. I’m embararssed I’m injured again…

Cortisone injection…

I’m surprised at that answer. Everyone has said that’s very risky (three doctors told me point blank they won’t inject achilles - I wasn’t asking them to, they were just up front about it) due to possibility of rupture. Had you tried all other conservative methods? What was behind the choice to inject it? I assume you got lucky and it didn’t rupture?

I don’t meant that to sound judgemental, if it does. I’m just surprised.

I’ll update w my “magic” swim sets for you later

At the expo of the Seville marathon a few years ago I saw a company that made a running shoe without the heel.
I’m not affiliated with them in any way and never tried it but your mention of cutting off the heel made me think of that.
I think this is their website: fbrconcept.com

interesting.
As I think you’ve noted, that’s not quite the part of the heel I’m trying to cut out. Funny looking shoe though.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it.
